Haiku Challenge with Clark Strand

This private, subscription-based Facebook group is home to the finest poets currently writing haiku in English. Each month’s activities include:
  • Four Weekly Challenges with Haiku Tips: Participants have from Monday afternoon to Thursday at midnight ET to submit up to eight haiku. From those submitted each week, ten or more are chosen for essay-length commentaries, plus 20-40 honorable mentions. These are posted the following week before the next challenge is issued.
  • Monthly Kukai: A Kukai is a monthly haiku gathering where poets submit 3 poems anonymously for commentary by their peers. Participants choose the five haiku they liked the best from those submitted and explain briefly what they liked about them. The results are then posted to the group.
The subscription fee for this group is $100 per month (or $1,100 yearly) payable to woodenbowl@aol.com via PayPal. Sending payment is all you need to do to register. No prior experience is required.

HAIKU—The Master Class (2023)

This year-long course, conducted in a private Facebook group, is designed to introduce poets to every aspect of the art of haiku. The 52-week curriculum includes a full-length Weekly Haiku Lesson with Discussion, a Weekly Haiku Challenge, a Monthly Kukai gathering (see above), and a one-on-one Weekly Review with Clark via email of up to ten of your haiku. The fee for the Master Class includes membership in the Weekly Haiku Challenges with Clark Strand, which is where the Weekly Challenges and Monthly Kukai take place. Registration for the 2023 Master Class is now open.

The fee for the year is $3,000 payable by November 1, 2022 to woodenbowl@aol.com via PayPal. Space is limited to 25 participants, so if you wish to reserve a spot, pre-register with a $500 deposit via PayPal at this time. Pre-registration opened on September 1.

Please note that all fees are non-refundable. Likewise, if you drop out midway through the year, you will need to start over in the event you want to complete the training, since this is a very group-oriented activity.

Haiku Teacher Training

This is a 10-month curriculum for Master Class graduates who wish to lead haiku groups of their own. The training consists of 40 one-hour Zoom sessions with follow-up teaching and editing activities during the week. The training runs from February through November of each year. For information on fees and curriculum, or to determine whether you qualify for the training, contact Clark at clarkstrand@aol.com.

TRICYCLE Monthly Haiku Challenges

This is a free online venue sponsored by Tricycle: The Buddhist Review. Each month Clark posts a haiku challenge (along with a haiku tip) and participants have until midnight ET on the last day of the month to submit as many haiku as they wish. Of those submitted, Clark will choose ONE haiku for commentary as the winner, plus TWO honorable mentions. These will be posted to Tricycle.org during the first week of each month.

Four times yearly ONE winning poem from each season becomes the subject for Clark’s “On Haiku” column in the print edition of the magazine. In terms of circulation, this is the largest regular venue for haiku in the English-speaking world.
