Gender & Labor inspection officers will jointly participate in 5th RIAL/GENDER Dialogue
Delegations from 25 countries have registered to the next RIAL/GENDER Hemispheric Dialogue on September 20! To build a gender-responsive labor inspection system, which will be the topic of this Dialogue, mainstreaming gender within the Ministries of Labor of the Americas is crucial and, therefore, it is critical to address it jointly from the gender and the labor inspection areas. As an important step towards this collaboration, we are pleased to report that many of the countries registered for the dialogue will have decision-makers of both areas participating in this important event.

Recommendations from the Americas to strengthen social dialogue: The final document of the Workshop on social dialogue is ready!
On July, representatives of governments, workers, and employers from 29 countries in the Americas took part in the RIAL/OAS Workshop “Social Dialogue for a Sustainable, Just, and Equitable Recovery,” which took place in hybrid format in Bogotá, Colombia. As the main result of the Workshop, the participants, based on shared experiences and through a group exercise, prepared recommendations to strengthen social dialogue in the region, as well as to ensure the full exercise of freedom of association and collective bargaining. These recommendations are enshrined in a document (available here), which will not only serve as a guide for future actions to strengthen social dialogue in the region, but will also be raised to the Ministerial level within the Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML).

Unemployment in the region returns to pre-pandemic levels, but with the risk of increasing informality
According to the Labour Overview Series report of the ILO, published last week, for the first time since the pandemic began, the region registered equal or lower levels of unemployment than the years prior to the pandemic. In the first quarter of 2022, the region registered an unemployment rate of 7.9% compared to 8.7% during the same period in 2019. Even though this seems as good news, it is worth noting that the decrease could correspond to the fact that indicators such as employment and participation rates have not completely recovered, implying that there is still a latent threat that informality and inequality will increase.

An approximate of 5.09 million people in the Americas live in a situation of modern slavery, according to the “Global estimates of Modern Slavery: Forced Labor and Forced Marriage” report of the Walk Free organization with ILO and IOM. Out of these, over 3.5 million live in privately or state-imposed forced labor, and over 1.4 million in forced marriage. Worldwide, the number of people in any kind of modern slavery increased from 40.3 in 2016, to 49.6 in 2021. The report also shows that this problem is affecting women disproportionately, as well as migrant workers.
