Make your garden climate-friendly!

We are delighted to announce that Gillian Fyfe has joined PLANT to continue as a development worker for the Climate Friendly Gardens project across Fife. Working with partners as a part of Climate Action Fife, we will share good practice and engage with a wider audience. This project follows on from a successful pilot last year, led by PLANT and coordinated by Angie Houghton. It will run until April 2027 funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Workshops and events focusing on climate friendly gardening development and techniques will be held regularly and on-line resources will be made more widely available. As part of the project PLANT is looking for a garden in Tayport which can be designed or adapted to be climate friendly with the progress shared as a ‘show and tell’ garden. There is a small budget available to help with climate friendly measures so please get in touch if you would like to be involved.

The Garden Gathering meets every Wednesday morning at 10.30 for coffee and activity at the Scout Hall. If the weather allows we then walk over to the Community Garden and tend to our vegetable plot. We are a small group who meet all year round and enjoy various fun activities. It is one of many community groups run by Alzheimer Scotland.

Our community groups are here to be enjoyed by anyone living with dementia or experiencing difficulties with their memory, including their friends and families. All are welcome, people who can attend independently and/or for those unable to do so should come with a companion who can provide support for them. New members are always welcome but please book a place on 07979 950887.

Tayport Climate Cafe takes on the energy crisis

The inaugural Climate Cafe meeting at the Community Garden brought over 30 people together to share our concerns about the climate and other issues in our community, to start talking about the solutions, and to propose topics for future sessions. Thank you to PLANT for hosting it in the lovely garden space and to Kaska, Sally, Jan and Jessie for providing the tasty cakes.

As we are facing an energy crisis this winter, the next two of our monthly sessions will focus on how we can make our homes more energy efficient:
  • 1 October - ‘Sharing lessons from sustainably retrofitting my stone-built home’ with Mike Alcock (RSVP on Eventbrite)
  • 5 November - ‘Making your home more energy efficient and help we can offer’ with Gavin Brady, St Andrews Environmental Network
And on the 5th December, we will take a long look at changes that happened in the past to put the changes we face now in perspective, with help from Prof Robert Duck presenting on environmental history of the Tay.

Get in touch on the email below if you would like to attend Cafe events remotely - if there is sufficient demand we will set up online participation via Zoom.

You can now subscribe to the brand new Tayport Climate Cafe monthly newsletter to hear about upcoming meetings and related activities. You can join us on Facebook or Instagram too @TayportClimateCafe.Or simply get in touch on tayportclimateaction@outlook.com.

Forest Garden - full of fun

The new  picnic bench is now in place with just a few tweaks needed to the path for easier access.

More 'eaters' ready at the Fruit Tree Walk

The plum trees and a few of the apple trees have struggled again with the long drought, some showing signs of mildew, however the heavy rains have come in time to swell up the fruit, giving an excellent crop of apples. Ready for picking now are the 2 trees nearest to the field at Garvie Brae playpark. King of the Pippins and Worcester Pearmain, both eaters. To test if an apple is ripe, cup the apple in your hand and gently twist. If it doesn’t come away easily, leave it be. Windfalls are generally fine to eat after a check over and a wash.

The Fruit Tree Walk is maintained by a group of volunteers and we always appreciate and welcome new people to come along and join in. If this could be you, please email janicegibson60@hotmail.co.uk.

PLANT going global!

The Community Gardens Beyond Communities programme is part by the Scottish University Insight Institutes (SUII) programme and brought together people involved in community gardens and community food growing projects from Fife and Dundee in Scotland, Brazil, Nepal, Mexico, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. PLANT was one of the community gardens that took part in the presentation and was part of the short film from Scotland along with Ninewells Community Garden, Campy Growers and the MaXwell Centre in Dundee and EATS Rosyth in Fife and the Gracemount Community Garden in Edinburgh. You can watch a short video about the programme findings on Vimeo.

All the projects involved talked about their work in communities and focused on the connection of community gardens and community food growing with wider issues such as creating green spaces in cities and towns, reclaiming land and climate change. Each project produced a short 5 minute film and a presentation for a series of monthly seminars which you can find here.

If you are interested in finding out more about the project please contact Jenny Glen, Community Education, University of Dundee at j.y.glen@dundee.ac.uk or on 01382 381447.

Weekly sessions with Tayport Talks have resumed and will run until 25th October. Tuesday afternoons at 2.15 in the Larick Centre. Join in for a chat and Larick Café refreshments.
