One of the most important issues in the 2022 election is climate. The climate crisis is upon us and each day brings us closer to irreversible tipping points. As the climate spirals out of control, those that have done the least to cause climate change suffer the most from the associated heat, flood, fire, drought, famine, disease and economic disruption. A vote for climate action is a vote for frontline communities, for social, racial and economic justice. Find out where your candidates for public office stand on climate. What is their plan? Does it empower the workers who will build a green economy? Does it address the needs of those least able to cope? Does it lead to a just and equitable transition from a fossil fueled world? Find out, hold our elected leaders and those in power accountable and vote. #Vote Climate Justice
MCAN has launched #VoteClimateJustice on our website and social media platforms. It’s important that voters have tools to decide which representatives will fight for climate justice with us. Our website has resources for you: Questions to ask the Candidates, Voter Information, Art Toolkits with signs to print out. We’re ready to #VoteforClimateJustice this fall — join us!

For further information to form your candidate choices: The Wabanaki Alliance announced their 2022 endorsements of candidates for the Maine Legislature. They also announced their decision not to endorse a candidate for Governor of Maine. Their decisions were based on past support of legislative priorities of the alliance by candidates for state office, and future support that was expressed through a recent questionnaire sent to non-incumbents.

Color of Climate (COC), a program of member organization Gateway Community Services of Maine, aims to center the experiences and narratives of Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) within the discourse and responses to climate change and environmental injustice in Maine. BIPOC youth and their communities, who are often most impacted by these issues, are engaged through COC to promote their understanding and leadership to address the climate crisis and other environmental justice issues. The program provides opportunities for students, educators and other community members to participate in relevant events, field trips, internships and volunteer roles that provide exposure and connection with the natural world and the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. COC was started in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic and at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, by Gateway Community Services of Maine (GCSM), a non-profit organization serving refugee and immigrant populations in the Lewiston-Auburn and Greater Portland areas. GCSM is now seeking to expand its presence to more rural areas of Maine including through establishing strategic partnerships and collaborations with key stakeholders in the wider environmental education and advocacy community.
Color of Climate is currently seeking Internship applications. Osama Mohamed is the new Color of Climate Program Coordinator and is the contact for these positions. You can reach him at: Osama.Mohamed@gcsmaine.org or scan the QR code on this flyer.

One Nation, Under Fraud: A Remonstrance | October 12th | 12-1pm
In April of 2022, Maine’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous, and Tribal Populations issued a report, One Nation, Under Fraud: A Remonstrance, outlining the history of tribal relations with the State of Maine and suggesting a framework for remedying those relations — for redressing the centuries of fraud and cultural genocide perpetrated by the state. This event will feature the report’s three co-authors, each of whom will share their unique perspective on the project and what it means for our community and the work before us today. View the report. This event is free and open to the public online.
