September in Georgia marks many important events – Labor Day weekend, the beginning of fall, and football season! We hope you will make the Trial Gardens a destination during your visits to Athens to watch the home games of the National Championship-winning Georgia Bulldogs!  Last year, we did not receive our first freeze until mid-December, and so the garden was full of color late into the season. Our weather in this region is highly variable, and it remains to be seen how long the flowers will be in bloom! We are still planning to host a fall houseplant sale, so stay tuned for details forthcoming.
Angelonia AngelDance™ ‘Violet Bicolor’ by Ball FloraPlant

Angelonia, or the ‘summer snapdragon’ is a perfect heat-lover for a hot, sunny location in the south. This variety has a gorgeous pattern that resembles a tiny orchid, and detailed beauty in each individual flower. Blooms are continuous and long-lasting, while the foliage is a deep shade of green.
Calibrachoa Bloomtastic ‘Rose Quartz’ by DummenOrange

Each year, we include both container trials and hanging-basket trials of all calibrachoa varieties. Hanging baskets provide better drainage, while concrete planters hold more moisture. The Bloomtastic series has consistently received high scores in both categories, and ‘Rose Quartz’ is a beautiful example! A big thanks to Imir, our former intern and current employee for taking all the calibrachoa and petunia pictures for 2022!
Celosia ‘Ornamental In-Ground Entry’ by All-American Selections

This year, the celosia competition was fierce early in the season. The competitors all showed off, with perfect crest-shaped blooms ideal for cut-flower gardens. The Entry is unique, in that it is able to produce a constant supply of bright red long-stem flowers rather than a single-stem cristata.
Euryops High Noon® by Proven Winners

Euryops is no stranger to the Trial Gardens – Dr. Ruter uses many plants adapted to rocky, sand, and gravel landscapes to fill our xeriscape or ‘desert’ garden. ‘High Noon’ is providing a flush of color and interesting leaf shape in this year’s trial beds late into the season, as well as a returning perennial in compact-shrub form in the desert area.
Hardy Hibiscus ‘1-1’ by Dr. John Ruter

Our hardy hibiscus collection has been stunning all summer long! If you drive by the Durham Horticulture Farm from June-August, you may catch a peek at Dr. Ruter’s field of hibiscus as a part of his breeding program. Here we have a light white with a pink center and red foliage. (Guest appearance by Lycianthes 'Great Clorox Disaster' in corner of photo, photo credit to Hannah!)
Juncus Graceful Grasses® ‘Blue Mohawk’ by Proven Winners

Juncus is a member of the rush, or Juncaceae family. A common rule of thumb: “Sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have nodes from the top to the ground.” This cool blue rush gives us a dramatic vertical thriller-effect and works well in many applications. Note, rushes generally require more water than grasses in full sun.
Kniphofia uvaria ‘Glowstick’ by Darwin Perennials

Here at the Trial Gardens, we see kniphofia bloom in our perennial beds during mild winters, offering a flash of color when many plants have retired for the season. ‘Glowstick’ offers a fun new color we have not yet included in our collection of deep oranges and reds. A great deer-resistant option, too!
Petunia CannonBall™ ‘Coral’ by Ball FloraPlant

Summer petunias enjoy abundant sunshine, regular fertilization, and periodic trimming for continuously colorful baskets and containers. We all enjoy showering our petunias with love and attention, but at this time of year, many varieties show whether they are truly built to last all summer long! CannonBall™ ‘Coral’ is still overflowing with color and flair.
Platycodon grandifloras Twinkle™ ‘Blue’ by Syngenta

A new seed introduction this year, the balloon-flower is a fun and fabulous flower for folks of all ages to enjoy. We love a plant that tells a story, and these lantern-shaped buds open up to reveal a twinkling star! As perennial gardens increase in popularity, it is great to bring in new and exciting trials.
Rex Begonia Jurassic Jr.™ 'Arctic Twist' by Ball Ingenuity

The Jurassic collection has stunned and wowed us all for their versatility in all aspects of gardening. In this warm, humid climate, they thrive in deep shade in containers, landscape, as well as in the houseplant community. ‘Arctic Twist’ is reminiscent of the swirling escargot-type Rex, but with a new metallic silvery-white hue.
