Hey y’all! If you need me, I’m probably crying at these kids' reactions to the new "Little Mermaid" Trailer. Also, did you hear that Enchanted is getting a sequel (!!) coming out on Thanksgiving Day? Kid me is screaming.

What Houston's Talking About

🌧️ Out of the Drought

Rainy conditions over the last couple weeks have brought much of the Greater Houston area out of drought conditions. At the end of August, the majority of Harris County was considered abnormally dry. [Houston Public Media]

🎨 Art Is Bond

A new art gallery with an exhibit focusing on Black art in Houston and around the world has opened in Montrose. [Houston Chronicle]

📱Suicide Hotline Launch

Calls to The Harris Center for Mental Health’s new suicide and crisis hotline have surged since the summer. The new 988 hotline, launched in July, has seen a nearly 40% increase in calls, with many people just wanting to get connected to resources. [Houston Public Media]

Urban Almanac: Mexican Plums

Not quite ripe — but getting there. (Robert Nunnally/Flickr)

Patti Bonnin, a naturalist at Houston Arboretum, writes:

"The Mexican plum, Prunus mexicana, is a native tree that’s gorgeous year-round. In early spring it’s adorned with fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Late summer through fall, small reddish-purple fruits appear. These delicious plums are high in antioxidants and packed with vitamins. They’re great for jams, jellies, or preserves — or you can leave them on the tree for local wildlife to munch."

Gripes: New Development Woes

Lisa Gray writes, “Houston gripes, anyone? Mine is how often development wipes away soulful stuff. Latest case in point: The Bellaire Broiler Burger — a portal to the 1950s, complete with excellent chili cheeseburgers — is closed."

Here's some other new development/construction woes.....

Cutter writes,
“Highways, highways, highways. Sometimes it feels like a city for cars here. People are an afterthought. We're all assumed to be in a car!

JoJo writes, “I live in Montrose...They wiped out a whole block at Westheimer and Montrose... Gone was Disco Krogers, Spec's, and Half Price Books ...Now I'm hungry, thirsty, and reverting to illiteracy …And for good measure they knocked down KPFT just to make sure my heart was broken

Rachel writes, “I am sad because skyrocketing property taxes, business owners retiring or dying, and galloping gentrification/yuppification are knocking out the institutions that have given our neighborhood its character, scale, and funkiness.”

Michael writes, “Houston is spending hundreds of millions on Intercontinental airport but they aren't addressing the problem: access. It's a tough drive to get to those fancy terminals and you only have one option: to drive! The original plan for IAH included rail to downtown but the cab companies killed that. Dedicated bus lanes from remote parking are needed.”

Got something you want to complain about? Are you also over all the new development? Gripe to us houston@citycast.fm

What's up w/ our hip-hop scene?
Congrats to the winner of Where Is It, Susanna! She guessed correctly at 6:07 a.m. that the photo was of Highland Village shopping center in River Oaks.

This also made me LOL from Missy: “My 6 year old calls it the “Round and Round Place” because we always have to circle ⭕️ the parking lot 3 or more times to find a spot!”
