1. Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth: World Ozone Day

This year, the Montreal Protocol to Protect the Ozone Layer, turns 35. On World Ozone Day, September 16, we celebrate the Montreal Protocol, the most successful environmental treaty to date. This treaty ended one of the biggest threats humanity faced as a whole: the depletion of the ozone layer by ozone-depleting gases used in aerosols and cooling.

Under the 2016 Kigali Amendment, nations have committed to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as well – a move that could avoid up to 0.4°C of global temperature rise by the end of the century. The Montreal Protocol and its Amendment are promoting the uptake of climate friendly and energy-efficient cooling technology world-wide.

RefNat4LIFE partners promote the switch to natural refrigerants: the most environmentally and climate-friendly alternatives to the use of HFCs.

Project partner BNN highlighted the important role of natural refrigerants and energy-efficiency at the world’s biggest organic fair in July in Nuremberg. In a workshop on „Sustainability and CO₂ reduction in food retail” participants discussed challenges and potential approaches at store level, with cooling being one of the main energy intensive components. RefNat4LIFE tools provide information for store owners to reduce emissions from cooling appliances.
