From Our CEO

Dear All,

I would like to begin by congratulating one of our volunteers Jutta Filla for winning two awards - the 2022 Local Community Hero, and a NSW Seniors Award.
In this edition, I have written a summary of the Department of Health and Ageing’s Webinar titled “Reform in home aged care and regulation”.
October is a delightful time of the year- the combination of warm and some cool days and daylight saving time begins. October means that my jacaranda trees bloom with purple flowers very soon.
Please don’t forget to put your clocks forward an hour on Sunday October 2.
A friendly reminder that our Office will be closed for the Labor Day public holiday on Monday 3 October and will re-open again on Tuesday 4 October 2022.
I hope you enjoy reading the October e-newsletter and look forward to seeing you at our Annual General Meeting on 18 November.

Warmest Regards,
Leanne Babic- CEO

Reform in home aged care and regulation- Update
by Leanne Babic CEO

The webinar on 31 August was informative about the future of Aged Care in Australia for providers, such as Easy Care Gardening and our clients, your carers, and families.

The webinar included information about:

  1. The new Aged Care Act - to be implemented in 2023
  2. the new Support at Home Programme - to commence in July 2024
  3. The new Aged Care Regulatory Framework.
Together we can shape the future of Aged Care in Australia. To see my Reform in Home Aged Care and Regulation highlights from the webinar, click here.
Note: I have included links to consultation papers, webinar and the Department of Health and Ageing- engagement hub where you can participate in consultation papers and surveys.

For further information I would encourage you to sign up for the Department's newsletter.

Special Award Presentation

Member for Castle Hill, Ray Williams MP presented volunteer gardener Jutta Filla with her Local Community Hero and NSW Seniors Awards in September.

The Hon. Ray Williams said, "I was delighted to recently have the opportunity to host Ms Jutta Filla in my Office and present her with the NSW Government’s Community Hero Award and a NSW Seniors Festival award.

Jutta is almost 80, yet continues to donate her time gardening for senior citizens and volunteering with the wonderful charity, Easy Care Gardening.
I would like to thank Meredith Kirton, one of the Managers of Easy Care Gardening, for bringing Jutta’s tremendous community work to my attention.
Best of luck for the future Jutta!"

Easy Care Gardening CEO Leanne Babic added,“ Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time, they just have the heart” (Elizabeth Andrew). This quote describes so many of our volunteers to me and is the one I think of to describe Jutta Filla, the Winner of the 2022 NSW Government Seniors Festival and Local Hero awards in Castle Hill."

What's flowering at your patch?  We'd love to see a few pics of your garden now that it's spring and flowering away.  Pictured here is Gardening Coordinator Jennifer with a beautiful bunch of Tibouchina or Purple Glory Bush, that was pruned at a client’s place.
Thanks to a grant from The City of Ryde, this group of volunteers (Ian Norman, Ian Rumsay, Chris Mundell and Al and Wendy Robertson) were able to make short work of this garden clean up.  As their coordinator Shuna explained "They were very happy to have the new tools and finally the hedge trimmer and blower."  Thank you to the City of Ryde for the generous support for the Improving Equipment Accessibility Project in Areas 1 and 2.

The City of Ryde has also given ECG a few copies of this great guide that unpacks weeds and how to control them.  If you think your team could do with a copy, let us know and we can arrange for your Gardening Coordinator to bring one to your next garden visit.
