Parent Bulletin

Autumn 2022 Half Term 1

Dear Parents & Carers

I am delighted to write to you at the beginning of the new academic year.

The record breaking GCSE and A level results have provided staff and students with a great start to the academic year.  I am pleased to report that most students have made a fantastic start to the new academic year.  Our Year 7s have settled nicely and got into the new routines for learning exceptionally well. The Y12s have also made an impressive start and have begun their post 16 studies with great enthusiasm and maturity.
Meadowhead’s recent successes with Ofsted and exam performance have not prevented us from looking at ways we can continue to strengthen our practice and provision further.  There is no room for complacency and our ambitions for the school are evident across the school in our improvement planning. Our two Training days at the start of the year were useful in sharing our new priorities with all staff to ensure that we continue to strive for excellence in all areas of our work.

I look forward to many things this year but in particular, welcoming parents back into school for face-to-face events and our Whole School Production.

In the meantime, please look out for key dates for your child so that you are fully informed about the academic year.

I look forward to sharing with you your child’s and the school’s successes in the near future.

Yours faithfully,
Mrs K Grewal-Joy
Headteacher

Homework

Homework remains a key priority at Meadowhead.  Research suggests that completing homework at secondary school is the equivalent of spending an additional 5 months in school.  We also have high standards for the quality of the homework we set.  It is not set for the sake of it, but to develop students’ literacy, memory and skills.
All homework at Meadowhead is set on ClassCharts.  If you haven’t done so already, please download the ClassCharts app and discuss any homework that is due with your child.  Where possible, please try to provide a quiet place for your child to complete homework, without distractions from phones, TVs or computer games.
A few changes for this year:
  • We now have homework clubs every afternoon at 2.45 on each year corridor, where students can complete their homework in a quiet environment, supported by a teacher.  Please encourage your child to attend these, if you think they would be helpful.
  • Each child has been issued with a homework folder to store paper copies of homework.  Students should bring this to school every day.
  • We are no longer using H1s to indicate homework that has not been completed.  Instead, the information in the image below explains how you will see your child’s progress with homework.
If there is any way we can help your child with their homework, please do not hesitate to be in touch with school.
New Security Gates

Please be advised that all school gates, including the main school car park gate will now be closed during the day.  In order to access school after 9am, the pedestrian gate will need to be used which is now located to the right of the main car park gates. You will need to press the buzzer to allow access from our reception team.

Please take this into consideration when dropping students off at school or collecting them, as the main staff car park gates will now be closed.

What Parents & Carers Need to Know about Roblox

Roblox is one of the most popular video games on the market. By 2020, the game’s makers were claiming that more than half of children in the USA play it. As a ‘sandbox’ title, Roblox offers a huge amount of creative freedom: it lets players create their own gaming experiences with the Roblox Studio to build custom levels and games, which can then be shared with other players online. Roblox fosters creative thinking and enjoys a robust online community of fans.

A Guide to Google Chromebooks

Google Chromebooks were first introduced in 2011 as a budget-friendly alternative to Windows laptops. They have a cloud-based desktop operating system created by Google that performs internet-based tasks simply and quickly. Although primarily optimised for Google apps – such as Gmail and Google Drive – newer devices also support Android apps and offer a range of parental controls via the Google Family Link tool. Nonetheless, whilst these tools are comprehensive, there are some limitations which means there are a number of risks trusted adults should be aware of.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as addiction, malware and your child having access to the internet at all times.
