Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative Update

Age-Friendly Shared Data Workgroup Update

We are proud to announce the completion of two of the three workgroup sessions to develop an Age-Friendly Initiative (AFI) shared data. These meetings occurred on July 29, 2022 and August 19, 2022, and the goal of these two one-hour participatory data analyses was to engage a diverse group of collaborators around building data literacy, interpreting and finding themes in raw data, and decision making around how to utilize results to affect impactful change. We discussed age-friendly programs, activities, and the data that has already been collected from these efforts, and reviewed ways to link data-related opportunities to connect to AFI’s vision, inform the evaluation questions, and/or guide potential data indicators towards AFI’s shared data developing strategies. If you want to participate on the third, and final Shared Data Workgroup in October, please reach out to isabelandrade@urbanhp.org

AARP Railvolution Roundtable Series

The Miami-Dade AFI is excited to share the completion of the Rail~Volution MOVE 6-Week Learning Framework in July, 2022. Through this conversation series, stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds looked at a variety of system, and user, improvements that can allow people to feel confident in choosing and using transit to get them where they want and need to go. Miami-Dade County currently has various modes of transit, such as the Metrorail, Metromover, Metrobus, Brightline, and others, but it is not always easy to navigate across these modes, especially for older adults. Through the Rail~Volution conversations, the cohort identified key priorities and initial action steps shaped by a collective vision and statement of purpose. We are now working towards making transit more user friendly, identifying the barriers so that people can truly access various transit options.

Launch of Mini-Grant Program

The Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative (AFI) is proud to announce its fourth Age-Friendly Mini-Grant Program. The Mini-Grant Program will officially launch on October 1, 2022 with the goal to jump-start age-friendly projects across the County. In 2017, the Miami-Dade AFI and partners conducted surveys of age-friendliness. Urgent areas identified in the surveys for action included the domains related to Housing, Transportation, Civic Participation and Employment and Community Support and Health Services. Projects will be considered in any age-friendly domain, but especially in those most urgent areas. The Initiative will grant five (5) $2,500 mini-grants to selected eligible projects. Each project must target a specific community, group or neighborhood that will benefit from the project; have an older adult focus; and focus on a specific age-friendly domain or domains. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2022.

Florida Department of Health - "Don't Put Off The Flu Vaccine This Year"

Summer is coming to a close, fall is just ahead, and while we look forward to a vaccine for Covid-19, there’s no better time than now to take advantage of flu vaccine. Unlike Covid-19, most of us have general knowledge about flu season and the flu—a respiratory disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization or death. But like Covid-19, flu shares many of the same symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle pain or body aches and headache. Immune systems become weaker as we age—this puts people 65 years and older at a higher risk for serious flu complications.
