It's Never Too Late
A man was retired from academia: an architecture professor at the University of California, Berkeley. One day, the lady that cleaned his house brought someone along to help. Later he realized he did not ask the friend’s name. He thought, “Russell Ellis, your father’s mother was born into slavery…You have the right to invisibilize no one.”
He asked her name and promised to sing it every time he saw her. That is how it started. That is, the 11 original songs he went on to write, and recorded at the age of 85. By the way, her name was Eliza.
I read this story in a series from The New York Times called, “It’s Never Too Late.”
I loved reading the different stories about people who found creative outlets, literary talents, and random hobbies that brought them a new sense of delight, fame, and yes, a new sense of spirituality.
To read this collection of stories is like reading about people who were living with a new sense of purpose. And they all speak of the joy that poured from their lives that surprised them!
Their stories sounded familiar. Almost like when it was not too late for the fishermen to become disciples, the tax collector to become a pastor, or the barren woman to become a mother.
It is never too late to be a Stephen Minister or a Bible study attender. It is never too late to join the choir, be a foster parent, go on a mission trip, join a support group, or heaven knows – be a children’s Sunday School teacher!
It is never too late to open ourselves to what God has for us today! May we find the sheer joy that our lives offer—to ourselves, to our neighbors, to our world, and to our God!
Blessings,
