Week 6: ASKING THE IMPOSSIBLE - AND GETTING IT

Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you-I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus- appeal to you for my child, Onesimus.  (Philemon 8-10a).

Philemon seems to have been a wealthy man with a house large enough for the local Christian church to meet in it. He also had slaves-including a young man named Onesimus who ran away, possibly stealing some money from Philemon at the same time. By some miracle, Onesimus wound up in contact with Paul, who was in prison for Jesus' sake. Paul taught Onesimus about Jesus, and soon Onesimus was a believer. Then they agreed it was time for Onesimus to go home to face the music.

That had to be scary. What would Philemon do when Onesimus returned? Trusting in the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote this short letter for Onesimus to take back with him.

Paul explained how he loved Onesimus as his own child, and is now sending him home, asking Philemon to "receive him as you would receive me" (verse 17). What! Receive a runaway with the same welcome he would give to Paul himself? Yes, and Paul continues: "If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account... I will repay it:' He even hints that Philemon should set Onesimus free: 'This perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother" (verses 18, 15-16).

In this world, nobody forgives like that. Nobody takes in a runaway thief without punishment and then promotes him to the status of family!

But it looks like it happened. There are historical traces of an early bishop named Onesimus. If this is the same man, it looks likely that Philemon did what Paul asked-he forgave and loved Onesimus with the love of Jesus Christ.

How could this happen? The Holy Spirit softened Philemon's heart to make him more like Jesus, who gave up His own life for His enemies. If Jesus can love like that, He can create His love in us as well. It's never easy. But it is possible - because it is Jesus working.

PRAY

Dear Lord Jesus, make me like You. Amen.

REFLECT

When did someone show you undeserved mercy or kindness?

What is one impossible conflict you would like to ask God for help in?

Write or say a prayer about that conflict, asking God to work in the hearts of the people involved.

MEETING THIS THURSDAY!
This Thursday, September 22 stop into the Luther Room for the first PTL meeting of the year, starting at 6:30 pm.  We welcome parents to come share ideas for the school year on how to support teachers, students, or parents. Refreshments will be available for parents to stop in around their teacher conferences.

We have reached the halfway point of our joint service project with Lutheran Womens Mission League of Our Shepherd. We are working together to enable children and adults around the world have access to education by being equipped to attend school.  Each backpack needs a number of items, including 4-7 count notebooks, blunt scissors, 2 erasers, 2 crayons, 5 pack of pens and pencils, a ruler, and a pencil sharpener.  You all have shown God's love in abundance. As a school, we have reached 4344 items total! in 6 school days!!  These items allow us to fill 183 backpacks provided by LWML.  We can fill even more with your help.  If you feel called, please send your child in with a 70-page notebook and it will count toward their class total, just like their individual item.  For every 4 notebooks donated, we gain another full backpack.  Thank you for nurturing you children to learn what amazing impact they can have when they share their blessings with others. Have a blessed day.

Last day to turn in supplies is Wednesday, September 21st.

This trimester our Chapel offering is going to support Assentation Lutheran School.

Ascension Lutheran Church has established this school to proclaim the Gospel to the next generation and to provide a quality education so children can grow spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

This week OSLS Students gave $39.46 to support this mission.
For many years we have been able to offer before and after-school care for students and families that need it. Staffing this benefit has become increasingly difficult over the last few years. We have been advertising and seeking adult oversight in afternoon extended care for over a year, with no success. Additionally, finding available and qualified workers continues to be a concern. We are at a point where we can no longer sustain and offer afternoon extended care IF we do not find an adult worker (3:15-5:30 daily) and up to 2 additional workers within the next month.

As we continue to seek qualified and available individuals to fill these positions, we are also exploring local, offsite afterschool options to help our affected families. We hope to be able to provide solutions and assist you should we have to discontinue our afterschool program. We will continue to communicate with you weekly, but want to give you, our valued families, time to seek out other alternatives if we cannot staff this service going forward.

If you have any leads for hires, suggestions, or concerns please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Hedges.
This week marked our first Coffee and Conversations. Amy Hedges and Tracie Douglas visited with parents in the narthex at the start of the school day. This will be a reoccurring event, so please feel free to stop by the narthex to say hello and grab a hot cup of coffee.
