The social model for us, is a framework that once you grab it by its bars and understand what it is, it can lift you up and give you a bird’s eye view of how the world actually works. It will support an inner strength you always had and you can lean on that framework when you have the tougher days.

Come to Our webinar
Everything you wanted to know about disability but were afraid to ask Part 3: Let’s talk about the Social Model of Disability: and why that matters!

What do Disabled People want from Disability Service Providers: A Consultation to explore how disabled people can inform the delivery of their services Tuesday 11th October 11am to 1pm

ILMI as a Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO) recognises that many disabled people receive services through Disability Service Providers that allow them to live independent lives, with freedom, choice and control. Many of these services are vital to ensuring disabled people can be part of society, living their lives in an inclusive way based on principles of rights and equality.

However, how much control do disabled people have over these services? And what strategies can ILMI as a DPO put forward for how the Sector can be accountable to the needs and wishes of disabled people.

Join us on Zoom for an interactive discussion space for disabled people to discuss developing a position paper on Disability Services. This will take place on Tuesday 11th October from 11am.

ILMI submission on the Housing Commissions Public Consultation on a Referendum on Housing in Ireland

ILMI is in support of a referendum on the introduction of a constitutional amendment regarding housing.

In order to have a potential referendum on housing in Ireland ILMI recommends that:
•            Disabled people and Disabled Persons Organisations are involved in all communications in progressing to the introduction of a constitutional amendment regarding housing.

•            Information and communication needs to be accessible

•            Housing needs to include all accommodation types that is culturally appropriate and represents our intersectionality as citizens.

•            Housing is not just about “the house”, it is about building genuine inclusive communities. One which is linked to local amenities, access to education, employment and transport opportunities.

•            Disabled people are represented in all conversations about housing.

•            ILMI believes Disabled people should be involved more in “mainstream” policies such as “Housing for all”. Disabled people should not be segregated in policy making.

•            There is a need for Disability equality training.  Disability equality training needs to be a fundamental requirement for all stakeholders involved in housing and independent living.

•            There is a need for Disabled people to be paid for their time (including expenses).

•            ILMI recommends that all meeting agendas and materials need to be circulated at least a week in advance of any meetings. This is for accessibility purposes but also allows all people involved the adequate time to review and contribute to the agenda effectively.

Please read the full submission for the detail in the recommendations, the above are just the headlines. ILMI also sets out exactly why we are in a strong position with all the work that has gone into the Independent Living housing pillar to make this a robust document. Please email jamescawley@ilmi.ie our policy officer with any questions or queries you may have in relation to this piece.
