Engage Nova Scotia September Road Trip
Engage Nova Scotia's September Road Trip is a series of 10 community conversations about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and quality of life in Nova Scotia. All events will take place at your local NSCC from 6-8pm. RSVP to the one closest to you.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission is working with the newly appointed Federal Housing Advocate to create a joint approach to monitoring the areas where disability rights found in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities meet the right to housing.
Federal Housing Advocate, Marie-Josée Houle, has launched an online tool to receive submissions on systemic housing issues and unmet housing needs across Canada. https://www.housingchrc.ca/en/housing-submission
The tool asks a series of questions about experiences with inadequate housing or homelessness and provides an opportunity to share how these issues should be resolved.
Submissions can be made by individuals, or on behalf of someone, and by organizations.
The Advocate will use the information to make recommendations and help inform the monitoring plan for the right to housing and the rights of people with disabilities.

FUNDING INITIATIVES
On September 21, 2022, the Government of Canada will launch the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) 2022-23 Call for proposals (CFP) funding community-based projects across Canada. This program is offered by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
The deadline to submit applications is November 1, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Organizations will have a total of six (6) weeks to submit their applications. The information on the NHSP Funding Page will help you learn more about this funding opportunity.
The NHSP supports projects that address the following objectives:
- Promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations;
- Engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others;
- Expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse;
- Supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and
- Providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors.
Organizations will be invited to apply for funding that supports the program’s national priorities:
1. Supporting healthy ageing
2. Preventing senior abuse
3. Celebrating diversity and promoting
4. Helping seniors to age in place

The TD Ready Commitment Program offers grants to eligible organizations to support programs that align with one of the four drivers of the TD Ready Commitment: Financial Security,Vibrant Planet, Connected Communities or Better Health.
If applying for programming that will take place in Summer of 2023 (including Pride and National Indigenous Month), apply by October 3, 2022.

Nova Scotia Community Health Board Wellness Fund Grants now open

The Seniors Care Grant has been expanded to up to $750 annually, from a previous amount of $500 annually, to include a one-time $250 Home Heating Assistance Grant
Applications are now open. This grant will be available to all eligible Nova Scotians 65 and older, including people who have already received the Seniors Care Grant and the Home Assistance Rebate Program in the past year. The grant is available for the cost of oil, wood, electricity, and other energy sources.
Eligibility Criteria include:
You still reside in your home
• The property or lease agreement is in your name or includes your name
• You are 65 years of age or over
• You have an annual household net income of $37,500 or less

Applications for the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors, which helps low-income seniors with their municipal residential property taxes, opened Friday, July 1. The program offers eligible seniors a rebate of half of their property taxes, up to $800.
To qualify for the rebate, seniors need to meet eligibility criteria, including:
-- 2021 municipal residential property taxes are paid in full
-- their name is included on the property taxes
-- they receive or are eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or Guaranteed Income Supplement - Allowance from Service Canada.
Applications are open from July 1 to December 31, 2022. Applicants who received the rebate last year will receive an application by mail.
This year, applicants will also be able to apply for the Heating Assistance Rebate Program on the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors application.

COVID-19 UPDATES
Second Booster Dose
Starting in July adults 50 to 69 years of age in Nova Scotia were eligible to book a second booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine, though public health is recommending that people wait until Fall when rates of the illness are expected to be on the rise.
