Dear <<First Name>>,

As we move into September, the new school year is coming up quickly! We know the beginning of a new school year is an exciting time for many students and families, but it also can be a time of high spending and economic challenges. As British Columbians face these challenges, we’re working to make the back-to-school season more affordable for the families that need it most.

As we work to make sure students have a strong start to their school year, this week, we announced $60 million in funding for the Student and Family Affordability Fund; we’re working with our partners at school districts across the province to make sure this money is well-spent to support students and families needs.

We are continuing our Ministry Spotlight! This is where we highlight the key 2021 accomplishments of my ministry, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Education.
CleanBC

My ministry's highest priority is ensuring that people can access and be successful in their post-secondary training and education. These investments will build a strong and resilient workforce ready for any challenges.

Building a cleaner future means new opportunities for people and businesses and creating good jobs across the province to do things better, more efficiently, and sustainably. As B.C. advances to a low-carbon economy, we recognize that in some cases, exiting jobs will need to adapt to new technologies and innovations. B.C. will ensure a future workforce that is inclusive, resilient and adaptable to both rapid and incremental changes.

My Ministry remains committed to helping students by removing barriers to education by funding initiatives and programs to empower Indigenous students to access post-secondary education.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:
B.C.'s economy recovered faster than expected in 2021-22

The past year was incredibly challenging for British Columbians with the pandemic and devastating climate disasters. The Province’s year-end Public Accounts show B.C. had a strong fiscal result last year, bolstered by a faster-than-expected economic recovery as government made record investments to support British Columbians.

Looking ahead, we’ll keep using this economic strength to support British Columbians, including bringing in new measures in September to help those who are struggling the most with global inflation.

New mobile app will improve access to health records

It’s important for people to be able to access their health information quickly and at any time. People in B.C. now have an easier way to access their health records with the launch of the Health Gateway mobile app. To learn more about the Health Gateway app, visit: https://gov.bc.ca/healthgateway

Innovator Skills Initiative supports more tech jobs

It’s important that people from under-represented groups are able to join B.C.’s growing tech sector. In 2021, our government provided $15 million to the Innovator Skills Initiative to help people from under-represented groups get their start in the technology sector in 2022 and 2023.

As a result of the program’s success, the Province is allocating a further $583,000 this summer to allow waitlisted businesses to access the program.

Seniors benefit from age-friendly grants to B.C. communities

Taking care of our seniors and making sure they have access to the support and services they need is a priority for our government. To support seniors in leading active and independent lives, $500,000 in grants for age-friendly assessments, planning and projects have been awarded to 25 communities in B.C., including four Indigenous communities.
