President's Message
 The Grand Canyon
I remember my first job as a dietitian in Blackfoot, Idaho. I was the only dietitian in town. The Idaho Dietetic Association held quarterly district meetings in Pocatello, an hour away, but I only attended one meeting in the two years I was in Blackfoot. I really would have benefited from having a network of dietitians to engage with during those early professional years. In retrospect, I needed a mentor and a sounding board even if I didn’t know it at the time. Now I appreciate being around new dietitians who bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to counter my cynicism. It would seem that the limitations of networking due to location would be a thing of the past. There are plenty of opportunities to engage with AZAND without leaving home. Yet, a large number of dietitians do not participate and feel disconnected from AZAND.
How do we bridge the canyon? How can we engage with dietitians in the state who are not able to attend district or annual state meetings? What are the resources needed by dietitians living in rural areas of Arizona? Is there another structure for the association that would strengthen our capacity?

Clinical Dietetics Mini-Conference
The Central District of the Arizona Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (C-AZAND) would like to invite you to a Clinical Mini-Conference on Saturday, September 17, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at St. Joseph's Hospital (please arrive at 7:30 am to register and to enjoy a complimentary light breakfast, provided by Kate Farms). There will be four presentations worth 4.0 CEUs.

The Advocacy Committee Wants Your Recipes!
Each month the advocacy committee sends out recipes to the 90 AZ district legislators as a way to establish connections and to make us known. We would like each recipe we send to be a recipe created by a RDN, DTR, intern or student as a way to better promote our members and to really establish us as the nutrition experts.
If you are interested, please email Erika Barrera, our Public Policy Coordinator, your homemade recipes, your name and credentials, and your website or professional social media handle (if you desire) so that we can reference you as the creator on the recipe card we create.

Do you know someone who would be a great candidate for the national Academy’s ballot? Nominations are now open! The Nominating Committee is accepting nominations for visionary and dedicated individuals for the following 2023 national ballot positions. Nominations for the positions of president-elect, speaker-elect and treasurer-elect close September 2, 2022. Nominations for all other positions are due by October 24, 2022.
