September is Literacy Month
At home, at work and in the community ... literacy connects us.

At home

- Literacy skills help us find, understand and use health information.
- Literacy connects us to our kids. Having books and reading aloud at home help develop
children’s literacy skills.
- Literacy connects us to better finances. Strong numeracy skills help us manage our money.
At work
- Literacy connects us to employment. Strong literacy skills are connected to having a job and earning more money.
- Literacy connects us to health and safety. Strong literacy skills help keep us safe at work.
- Literacy connects us to learning. People with stronger literacy skills are more likely to
participate in adult education and job-related training.
In the community
- Literacy connects us to civic engagement. Canadians with strong literacy skills are more likely to vote and volunteer.
- Literacy connects us to others. Literacy skills help us communicate, participate and feel
included.
- Literacy connects us to our rights. Literacy helps us understand our rights and
responsibilities. It helps us understand what to do in legal proceedings.
- Literacy connects us to the digital world. Digital access and skills allow people to fully
participate in society.

We are celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8th.  Watch for the lights at Lafarge Lake, Pinetree Way, and Port Coquitlam City Hall to be lit in purple to celebrate this important initiative!

Back to School Reading Suggestions

Reading books that nurture Heart-Mind well-being can help ease children and youth's transition back into the classroom by strengthening the 5 Heart-Mind qualities.

Connect with 20 compelling chapter books and graphic novels through the Heart-Mind Reading List: 20 Books for Back-to-School for Teens and Tweens. The books on this list, which are suitable for grades 4-8, can teach social and emotional skills while also providing readers with engaging stories to whisk them away to new worlds. Each list has a coloured heart to indicate the Heart-Mind quality promoted in the story. Find the reading list, along with several activity ideas to help children and youth "fall" back into Heart-Mind well-being beyond the book shelf here.
