"Different cultures coming together to feed hundreds of families in Flushing"

On Thursday, August 4th, 2022, the MinKwon Center for Community Action, along with community members from different backgrounds came together to launch the Flushing Food Collaborative, a pilot program to help local residents who need emergency assistance after the largest food pantry in downtown Flushing was evicted by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) from the Bland Houses.

The MinKwon Center is responding to a crisis - nearly 1 in 5 people in downtown Flushing are food insecure. This is a result of multiple factors, including rising inflation and food prices, being undocumented and not being able to qualify for government programs such as SNAP and unemployment benefits, and also rampant development and gentrification taking place in downtown Flushing forcing low-income families and seniors with fixed incomes to choose between a nutritious meal or decent housing conditions.

MinKwon’s involvement in fighting food insecurity through the Flushing Food Collaborative is special as it is helping us build bridges and deepen ties with other ethnic and racial communities to address common problems of poverty that affect all of us.

We need your support to help continue this operation. Consider making a donation. All proceeds will go towards the purchasing of low-cost and discounted groceries to feed Flushing families in need.

Yesterday marked our fourth weekly distribution providing bags of fresh produce to families in Flushing. To date through community-driven donations, we've distributed over 1,200 bags and over 25,000 pounds of food.
