🌦️ 81°/ ☔ 66°

Happy Tuesday, Washington. We’re doing another round of D.C. gripes in tomorrow’s newsletter. This is your chance to complain to someone other than your therapist, and for FREE. But remember, you get what you pay for.

📰 What D.C.'s Talking About

Keep Takoma Weird
A sidewalk art project by kids in Takoma Park has led to a debate over what counts as graffiti. City officials want to power wash it, but residents are asking for an exemption, saying they prefer to keep the neighborhood “funky” and “artistic.” It’s what we like to call a “classic Takoma dust-up." C’s Get Degrees
D.C.’s standardized test data was released from last spring, and the results aren’t good. Math proficiency fell across all grades, and reading levels are at their lowest in five years. Officials say this was expected after two pandemic years, and D.C. is amping up tutoring and summer schooling to bring those grades up. [Washington Post]

Nights at the Office
A new office-building-to-apartment conversion is planned for two older buildings on Connecticut Avenue, north of Dupont Circle (above the U.S. Post Office). Post Brothers – a real estate firm specializing in residential conversions – will transform the 700,000 square feet of office space into hundreds of lux apartments. Development starts next year. Help Your Neighbors Live Litter Free

Overflowing trash cans on the National Mall. (NPCA Photos/Flickr)

What do you do if you see a trash can overflowing like this? Instead of placing your Starbucks on top like a game of giant Jenga, try this. It takes two minutes and saves your neighbors from nasty rodents and smells.

  1. Go to 311.dc.gov or download the 311 app (you don’t need to login, just continue as a guest).
  2. Click “request,” then search “litter can collection.”
  3. Drop a pin on the map to show where the can is located.
  4. Optional: Add a picture or any other reference info.

Voila! DCPW will be there within two days to pick it up.

Tip: This also works for potholes, abandoned bicycles, and park maintenance.

More of a visual learner? This TikTok gives a great tutorial.

The Best Place to Watch Football

Football season is upon us, and the city is full of eager transplants wondering where to catch their favorite team on the big screen. Here are the top 10 ranking teams' DMV bars. Expect food and drink specials on game days!

UMD vs Iowa. Sadly, UMD (like every other DMV team) is nowhere close to the top 10 this year. (Maryland GovPics/Flickr)
  • Alabama – Proper 21 in Foggy Bottom, and Salazar on 14th.
  • Ohio State – Blackfinn DC in Farragut Square, or Solly’s Tavern on U St. (more locations in MD and VA).
  • Georgia – Franklin Hall on Florida Ave., and Dirty Water on H St.
  • Clemson – Mission Navy Yard (also a watch bar for Ole Miss and Iowa).
  • Notre Dame – Parlay DC on Wisconsin Ave., and Penn Quarter Sports Tavern.
  • Utah – Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington.
  • Michigan – Johnny Pistoles in Adams Morgan, Ivy & Coney in Shaw, Midlands in Park View (more locations in MD and MA).
  • Oklahoma – Astro’s Beer Hall in Metro Center.
  • Baylor – Crystal City Sports in Arlington.

Good luck, and may the best team win.

🎧 Today On City Cast DC

“We’re less likely to get rejected than we think we are, so going into friendship optimistic is really important.” — Dr. Marisa Franco

Ditch the “So, what do you do?” conversation starter. We can do better. Psychologist and D.C. local Marisa Franco coaches us on how to make and keep friends in this transient city.

Best Friends 4ever

Maryland folks, do you understand this new music video by Jimmy Charles? It’s called “It’s a Maryland Thing, You Wouldn’t Understand”, and I’m not going to lie … I really don’t.

Have a good short week!
