September 2, 2022
Dear Parents,
Thank you to all of the parents that showed up this week for Open House. We truly believe that parents and staff working together is the key to our success as a school. Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend with family and friends. There will be no school for Monday, September 5th.
Important Reminders
Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pick-Up Procedures:
Our doors open, and breakfast starts at 7:00 AM. We are hoping that this helps as we work through out transportation difficulties this year.
Parents please help us by not entering the building when dropping off your child.
During morning drop-off please avoid Warwick Ave. The street is closed to all traffic (including staff) until after 7:35AM. Only school buses and parents of our low-incidence students with assigned parking passes are allowed to enter Warwick. Theses students require special attention and care when exiting their vehicles.
Meade and Grace avenues are our drop-off streets and both are designated "No Parking" zones. You may stop and let your child exit but do not pull off to the sides. Also, please arrange the seating in your car to allow for an easy exit on Grace or on Meade for your child. It creates a dangerous situation if your child is walking behind your car. We have staff and 8th grade students helping walk your child as needed on Meade and Grace.
- Please be respectful of all our staff and crossing guards who are risking their safety to protect your children.
- Parents please let the office or teachers know by noon (or sooner) if there is a change in pickup or in Aftercare needs. You can text us at 312.600.7112 for immediate attention.
- Parents if you pick up your child before 2:00pm, you must provide a note for their half day absence. Avoiding afternoon traffic is not a valid reason to dismiss your child early.
- Please label all water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks and clothing items so that these items can find their way back to your child.
After School Classes:
After-school classes will begin September 12th . If you would like to sign your child up please fill out the 1st Quarter - Thorp Institute Form. Additional activities will be added as we confirm with our outside vendors and teacher sponsors. An application does not mean that your child is automatically accepted. Our after-school clubs have a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 20. Students not accepted for this quarter will have first choice for the subsequent quarter.
Smiling Strings will start next week on September 5th for students. For more info call: 773.788.8026 or Email: dgrimes@smilingstrings.com Visit our website at Register for Smiling Strings (see flier)
COVID Testing
Please remember to sign your child up for free COVID testing each Thursday. You must enroll your child again for the 2022-2023 school year at https://www.color.com/cust/readycheckgo-cps
Student Handbook
If you have not done so, please take time to read through our student handbook for more information about our procedures. We had a few students who needed to be reminded about the dress code and cell phone policy this week.
Volunteer Procedures
Field trips for various grade levels have already been scheduled. All parents chaperoning on field trips must have a Level 1 clearance. This includes a TB test and a background check. Please register here if you plan on accompanying your child on a field trip or if you plan to serve as a regular volunteer in the school. (We know that it says day trip chaperones require a level 2 clearance, but parent chaperones are often out of the line of sight of the teacher. The more rigorous checks are inconvenient but they help ensure the safety of all of our students.)
Volunteer for our parent groups by clicking our Volunteer Interest Form. We will share this information with our FoT and PTA. Active participation in our parent groups is one of the best opportunities to become part of our school community.
Please contact Maria Sanabria at mesanabria@cps.edu if you wish to participate in our Thorp After-Care Program from 2:30 to 5:30PM.
Enjoy the Labor Day weekend!
