Hispanic Heritage Broadcasts from Voces Oral History Center
In honor of Hispanic (Latinx) History Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15), Voces Oral History Center and KUT 90.5 Austin have partnered to bring stories of notable Latinas/os from the Voces archive to the airwaves, including short features on the Texas Standard. Many of these archives and people have connections to the Benson Latin American Collection. Listen to stories here.

Brazil at 200: Historical Reflections, Contemporary Challenges
Thursday and Friday, Oct. 13 and 14 | Online and In-Person
This two-day event, in commemoration of Brazil's independence, traces change and continuity in Brazil's history over two centuries. It will feature an in-person talk and reception hosted by Department of Art and Art History on Thursday, Oct. 13; livestreamed panels all day on Friday, Oct. 14 with a keynote by former Minister of Environment Marina Silva; and an exhibition opening and reception at the Benson Latin American Collection on Friday, Oct. 14. Painted Cloth: Fashion and Ritual in Colonial Latin America

This exhibition at the Blanton Museum addresses the social roles of textiles and their visual representations in media produced in Bolivia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela in the 1600s and 1700s. A Blast from the Past: The 2020 Lozano Long Conference
In February of 2020, LLILAS Benson hosted the 2020 Lozano Long Conference, Black Women’s Intellectual Contributions to the Americas. This superb event, organized by Professors Lorraine Leu and Christen Smith, included keynote addresses by Sueli Carneiro (Geledés Institute for Black Women, Brazil) and Carole Boyce-Davies (Cornell University). Leu and Smith interviewed Black Brazilian feminists Carneiro and Rosana Paulino during their visit to campus. Read "Voices of Black Brazilian Feminism."

LLILAS Welcomes a New Affiliate
Dr. Santiago Muñoz-Arbeláez, a native of Colombia, is Assistant Professor of History. He received a B.A. in History from Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá) and a Ph.D. in Latin American History from Yale University in 2018, His research interests include Latin American history, Atlantic history, early modern history, Indigenous studies, history of maps and other textual artifacts.
Opinion Piece and Keynote by Marcelo Paixão
In his ongoing series of articles for revista piauí, Professor Marcelo Paixão (LLILAS / African & African Diaspora Studies) writes about Brazil's elites. Read "Elites querem fazer crecer o bolo - mas sem distribuí-lo." Paixão recently presented the keynote address at the Congresso Brasileiro de Pesquisadores Negros. View the talk here.
