Funding Workshop: Introduction to NSERC Discovery Grants

Developing an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy for Tri-Agency Grant Applications

Tri-Agency grants are now evaluated on the researcher’s ability to incorporate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) within their research plan. Central Canada Resource Expo - CenCan, is being held at Thunder Bay's CLE Grounds on Wednesday, September 14 - Thursday, September 15, 2022.

Research Integrity Training Online Course for Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP)
Lakehead University’s Office of Research Services (ORS), in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, is pleased to offer a new on-line Research Integrity Training Module.  The new Lakehead University Research Integrity Training Module for Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) was created by the ORS to help research supervisors to provide appropriate training and education in the responsible conduct of research.  The training module was recently updated to reflect changes made to the Tri-Agency Responsible Conduct of Research Framework 2021

The Research Integrity Training Module is a free interactive e-learning course designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and other research personnel with an overview and basic understanding of the principles and best practices in the responsible conduct of research.  Undergraduate students involved in research activities are also encouraged to complete the course. Please note that learners who have completed the module will receive a Certificate of Completion.  Students who complete the training module can have this reflected in their Lakehead University Co-Curricular Record (CCR).  At the end of this course, participants will:
● Know the basics of the Responsible Conduct of Research Framework
● Understand their responsibilities as a Lakehead University researcher;
● Identify what constitutes a breach of research integrity;
● Gain knowledge on how to avoid a breach;
● Understand Lakehead University's policies and procedures for investigating a breach.
● Receive a Certificate confirming completion of the course

2022 Sony Research Award Program Final Courtesy Reminder
This is a final courtesy reminder that the Sony Research Award Program proposal submission deadline is 11:59 pm PDT on September 15, 2022.  The award is for up to $150K USD per year for each accepted proposal.  Complete information regarding this year’s Program is available here. 

SSHRC Participation in CIHR's Transforming Health with Integrated Care
SSHRC has agreed to fund a partnership research project through the following CIHR funding opportunity: Transforming Health with Integrated Care - Implementation Science Teams Grants. in collaboration with CIHR, SSHRC will support an interdisciplinary project that incorporates social science and humanities methodologies ". . . to improve our understanding of the socioeconomic and psychosocial context of underrepresented or historically excluded groups and/or Indigenous Peoples, in order to implement equitable, diverse and inclusive integrated systems/models of care that address their needs."


NSERC and DFG Strengthen Partnership
A new joint call for proposals dealing with sustainable processes and chemistry will soon be launched by NSERC and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft or DFG).  For more information, please click here.


SSHRC:  Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative
SSHRC has announced that it is extending the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative to continue to help the research community better understand data management as well as to support the incorporation of data management considerations into research practices. SSHRC's continuing initiative will support a minimum of ten meritorious Connection Grants proposals per competition under this initiative.


New SSHRC-CMHC Joint Initiative: Research Partnership Grants to Assess Longitudinal Housing Outcomes
The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), in partnership with SSHRC, recently launched the following new program:  Partnership Grants for National Housing Strategy Longitudinal Outcomes Research.  The goal of this program is the examination of key issues that impact outcomes of investments in affordable housing.  The program will support multi-disciplinary research teams made up of social sciences and humanities researchers, life scientists, engineers, and environmental scientists.  SSHRC will administer this funding opportunity and will work with CIHR and NSERC to promote the funding opportunity.  Deadline for applications:  November 22, 2022.  For more information, please click here.


2022 NFRF International - 2022 Horizon Global Platform Competition - Now Open
Through the New Frontiers for Research Fund (NFRF) International Stream, the Government of Canada has launched the 2022 Horizon Global Platform Competition, through which Canadian researchers may apply to obtain support for their participation in funded Horizon Europe projects.  Total support of up to $250,000/year (including both direct and indirect costs) for two years is available.  An application to the 2022 Horizon Global Platform grant must have a nominated principal investigator (NPI) who is also a signing partner on the Horizon Europe agreement.  The registration form  must be submitted by September 13, 2022, or within one week of the Horizon Europe deadline for their call, whichever is later (until December 2022); the full application is submitted after the Horizon Europe grant is awarded. Student Research Opportunities

Launch of Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative
NSERC and SSHRC have launched a funding opportunity to support First Nations, Inuit and Métis master’s students known as the Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative. This pilot initiative provides, to the limit of available funding, a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s program (CGS M) award holders.  In addition, the program also provides a $17,500 award plus a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous candidates who are on the waitlist for the CGS M program. Applicants follow the same application process as for the CGS M competition.  For more information, please go to the following website. Mitacs Training Courses: New instructor-led session dates for September to December
Mitacs has scheduled new dates for their facilitated sessions between September and December 2022 and would like to invite students and post-doctoral fellows to register.  Mitacs has added official certificates of completion for each of their course bundles. To register, students and postdocs need to create an account or log in on the Mitacs learning management system EDGE.
