Common Thread Weekly

Wednesday, 7 September                                                 Volume 23 number 1

Practice places mind in your muscles. ~ Amit Kalantri, Wealth of Words

Common Thread Community Chorus of Toronto is a non-audition, folk-roots chorus that promotes social justice and community through the performance of joyful, empowering, culturally diverse music from non-religious world traditions.

We remind choir members that we have a scent-free and cell phone powered off rehearsal space. Members will also refrain from bringing peanut products as snacks. With our focus on shaping music and building community, CT expects members to refrain from using digital devices in rehearsals, sectionals and performances that have health impacts (including Fit Bits, smart watches, and smart phones) given their EMF radiation emissions.

CHOIR NEWS

We have a whole group of new singers who may show up tonight, some singers returning whom we have not seen since the start of the pandemic, and some members changing sections; also some veteran members do not seem to be returning.
Per the letter Helen sent us all via email last week:

Here are a few reminders in advance of the first rehearsal...
  • If you haven't registered yet, please do so as soon as possible.  You may join us this season either In-Person at Cecil Street Community Centre, or virtually on Zoom.  Here is the link: https://forms.gle/bpLPN5d16rLaXLag6    Not sure if you want to join us yet?  That's not a problem - you can come to 3 rehearsals before deciding, but please fill out the registration form.
  • Please review our Covid Protocol for In-Person singers listed below.
  • Get your sheet music ready by visiting our website, printing a copy of the music we will be singing this term, and putting it in a black binder for rehearsals.  Here is the link, (password is CTsinger): https://commonthreadchorus.ca/members/music-scores/

Thank you everyone!

Helen

COVID PROTOCOL FOR COMMENCEMENT OF 2022-23 SEASON

The following conditions will apply for the commencement of the 2022-23 season. Should the rates of Covid 19 community infections increase additional measures may be introduced to reduce risks.

We urge all in-person singers to comply with the following:

1.    In-person singers must be fully vaccinated, having received at least 3 vaccine injections. Singers must produce a vaccination record (or if applicable a vaccine exemption document from a qualified medical practitioner) when first attending in-person.

2.    If a singer feels ill, they should not attend an in-person rehearsal or event. If they feel up to it, they can join the virtual rehearsal instead.

3.    If a singer has tested positive for Covid they must observe the full self quarantine period before joining an in-person rehearsal.

4.    Seating at rehearsals will be set up so that a one metre distance separates singers. Chairs will be positioned so that they are not directly behind another singer.

5.    Masking will not be required. Notwithstanding this, masking is recommended. Singers who wear a mask should use one specifically designed for singing.

6.    CT will continue to monitor the CO2 levels in rehearsal halls so that a level of 880 ppm is not exceeded. (An excess of CO2 is an indicator that fresh air ventilation is not keeping up with the level of breathing present. If required, the rehearsal may stop for a break during which singers will be asked to leave the hall so the hall air can refresh.)

7.    Singers who decide to socialize during rehearsal breaks should maintain a safe distance from each other. When possible, conversations are best held in an outside area. The same behaviour should apply when speaking with the conductor, assistant conductor/ accompanist or chorus administrator.

COMMUNITY NOTES
An urgent note from one of our returning tenors:
Carol Gordon, a stalwart of our Tenor section for years, is coming back, but needs transportation! She can no longer drive at night. She lives in the Eglinton-Yonge area. IF you can offer a ride at least this week, please give her a call at 416-487-5003.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Gathering Sparks, our sometimes special guests, are scheduled for a performance:

Gathering Sparks is the first concert in the series of folk concerts called "Acoustic Harvest" at St. Paul's United Church in Scarborough on Sept. 17. You can get tickets here and see what else is coming up.
Concerts (acousticharvest.ca)

And there is a special event coming up on 1 October:

A number of environmental groups including Environmental Defense have come together to plan a large protest event against the building of Highway 413 on Saturday, October 1st that will involve a walk and then a rally. It is to focus on saving farmland, saving endangered species habitat, asking the Federal Government for a full environmental assessment and to build solidarity among groups.

For the walk, we are dividing the approximately 60 km proposed route of Highway 413 into approximately 5 km chunks that different environmental/social justice/citizen groups and concerned citizens will walk on October 1st. (Some of the route is through farmland and a conservation area so the exact route cannot be followed.)

Everyone will be starting at 10 am to do their section of the route and then meeting for a rally at the Brampton Fairgrounds at 1 pm.

The Fairgrounds Livestock building has been booked which includes an outdoor area. The plan is to have a number of speakers including probably Mike Schreiner (Ontario Green Party leader), David Crombie (Chair of the Friends of the Golden Horseshoe, former Mayor of Toronto) and others. Local and other musicians are being contacted to see if they would like to be involved and other fun activities are being planned for children as well as perhaps a Farmer's Market.

I participated in the September 2019 Climate March and a protest last year at Queen's Park where Song Leaders such as Susanne Maziarz, Cassie Norton and Stephanie Drouin uplifted everyone with their call and response songs. We are planning a similar format of Call and Response songs interspersed with the speakers.

We will have a zoom session sometime in September with anyone interested from the various groups participating in the walk in attendance, so they would have songs to sing while they walked. We are planning to provide them with the words, music and possibly Youtube versions, so they could practice in advance and lead their own groups during their separate walks. And then they would also know the songs for the rally at the Fairgrounds.
