Newsletter of August 2022

The start of a new academic year, so that means a brand new and fresh generation of Electric Superbike Twente! This month EST6 will take over where EST5 finished their tasks as the 5th generation of Electric Superbike Twente.

But ofcourse EST5 was still active all month. Besides making sure that EST6 would have a smooth start into the year, they also visited events like Jack's Racing Day and the Market Festival of Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

News

We present to you the 6th team of Electric Superbike Twente! This week the new team of 2022-2023 started into the year with some fun activities and productive meetings to get the year going. Our team consists of 15 motivated students which will be working in three subteams.

Unfortunately not everyone can be seen in the picture but we will present our subteams soon. All of us are really excited to start working on the next generation of Superbike and to implement a lot of new ideas!
On the 31st of August we hosted our partnerday! We organized a day with a presentation, pubquiz, tour and ofcourse a drink! We are very thankful for our partners and hope to keep them up to date and excited for the project by hosting events like these!

Thanks to them we are able to keep working on this amazing project. We are looking forward to keeping a close and personal relationship with all of our partners.
On the 7th of August we were present at Jack's Racing Day! A big racing event at the TT Assen circuit where all sorts of vehicles were present for races and demo's. There were a lot of people interested in our bike, and we love to see more and more people recognizing us from our social media and/or race in Finland!

We were also present at the Market Fair of Saxion University of Applied Sciences. This is a fair where all new students of Saxion are able to meet different sport, social and/or culture groups in Enschede. We were happy to show the new students what we are doing and motivate them to potentially join a future generation of EST!

Partner highlights

For the fourth time in a row, Aalberts, who engineers mission-critical technologies enabling a clean, smart and responsible future, was our pole position partner. Electric Superbike Twente and Aalberts have been working together closely over these past years and our partnership has been crucial for the build of our superbikes.

Last year, working with Aalberts on the DELTA-XE, shows that together, we can achieve anything. Electric Superbike Twente has shown this year that we are at the forefront of Electric Motorcycle technology. We showed this by beating our rivals and superseding the maximum top speed of the current Moto-E superbikes.

Together with Aalberts, we look to a sustainable future where we can continue to break limits and show the world our excitement and drive for sustainable mobility.

We are thankful for their trust, enthusiasm, and drive to push boundaries together with us.

A word from our Chief Chassis

Monday the 5th of September, we started with the new chassis team on our next adventure for the upcoming academic year.
We started the week with an introduction to get to know each other. For this we have played some games, went bowling and had a party with all the other student teams in the Future Factory. The goal of the first week was mainly to get to know the team, the future factory and the life in the office.

Our overall goal for coming year is to design and manufacture a new electric superbike!

To get started, we were reading the documentations made by our predecessors and attended practical’s. As for example, a time management training from YER and we will have CAD2M workshops to improve our SolidWorks skills. Besides that, we dismantled the Apex RS together with the team members of EST5 to obtain hands on experience with superbikes and to learn about important design choices. We are hyped to get started with the year!

A word from our Chief Powertrain

Designing and building a reliable, well-handled and fast electric super motor has been proven difficult in the past.

This year, our team wants to pay more attention to these points and is designing a reliable and easy to work with motorcycle.
EST 6 has just started, but already with a lot of enthusiasm and new ideas about technologies and innovations that have been discussed.

Metal 3D printing is a great example.
FDM 3D printers have been around for a while now, they are fairly cheap and often used by businesses and hobbyists. This, however, is not the case for metal 3D printers. These printers can be particularly useful in combination with Topology optimization. This is a method where material use is optimized for a set of loads to create a strong and light object. In the previous years, a set foot pegs where designed and printed this way. We are currently exploring the possibilities of using a metal 3D printer for a bigger topology optimized part.
