              Course Update

  1. The Autumn Programme
The Autumn programme took place last week over 3 days on the 30th, 31st August and 1st September. The weather was excellent and allowed a clear run at the operations. However, Murphy’s law kicked in and a drive belt went on one of the machines and a greens mower also broke down on the first day, resulting in some lost time. The programme consisted of the following operations.
  1. Aeration
  2. Scarifying – a contractor hired with the appropriate machine to carry out this operation. Approx. 15 tons of material was removed in this process.
  3. Pot planting - solid tine machine punched holes in the greens.
  4. Over seeding – fescue mix
  5. Sanding – this involved spreading and brushing in the sand. Approx. 35 tons of sand applied in this process.
The greens were cut on Wed (7th) and Thur (8th) and will be cut and rolled on Fri (9th).  With the recent welcome rain and continuing warm weather, the putting surfaces should be back to normal in about 2 weeks.
  1. Some fairways have been severely burned but most of these should recover quickly, given the recent rain. Some areas will not recover and will need reseeding.

  1. Winter programme – The Green’s Committee have discussed priorities for the Winter programme, and this will be finalised next week with Ben Moore.

Ronan Barry was a further 3 points back on 18 with Eddie Walsh nicking fourth on 17 points despite his cut for a previous win.
Joe Brightling, not to be outdone by his playing partner Jim, birdied the 8th as did Aidan Canny with both winning €19.

The final league positions will be revealed at the Annual Dinner on Saturday 1st October. Details of the Final’s Day competition & dinner will be advised next week.

Congratulations to our Fingal Seniors Ladies team who have battled valiantly all summer and have now reached the final.   Well done to the team who endured the wind to beat The Island GC in the semi  final – Alice Kissane, Agnes Buckley, Nuala O Connell, Helen Webster, Jacyntha Cooke, Anne Kelly, Carol Scott and Geraldine McGuire.
Like all teams, success is built on the strength of the panel and the manager.  Congratulations to all who have participated for Howth in the Fingal Seniors this year and to Mary Geraghty who has managed  the team to get to the final.  We all eagerly await hearing who the opposition will be in the final.  I hope that as many of you as possible will be out to support our Howth Ladies in the final.

Good luck to all in the Michael Hannigan Shield on Saturday and to those of you who have qualified to play in the Club Cup Final on Sunday.  Let’s hope the weather is kind.

Ex Officio, Mary Tynan will host her prize giving evening, next Tuesday 13th Sept at 7:30pm for the winners of Trophies and Medals from 2020 and 2021.  ( this prize giving was unable to take place during Covid 19 ). We hope to see you all there.

Monday Nighters.
As we head into the autumn, we have another first time winner of our Monday Nighters, Aoife Dunne who won on a count back from Maura Dillon. I would like to thank Maura for all her work with the Monday Nighters over the summer.
