Your latest newsletter from Healthy Minds!

Dear Supporter,

We hope you are keeping well and have had a nice summer!  We have so much to share with you about all the wonderful things happening at Healthy Minds.

Join us for Suicide Prevention Day this Saturday at Morrisons Elland, for our celebration of Recovery & Support in the Upper Valley on Saturday 25 Sept, or for our Marathon finish line party at Woolshops on Sunday 2 October.

A little late into your inbox, but find all the latest news from Healthy Minds here...

An update on our groups

As many of you will be aware, our Recovery & Support service will be closing by the end of September, due to a lack of funding. Please see the full statement on the service closure here to understand more.

Recovery & Support provided a variety of groups and activities across Calderdale, developed and run by the R&S staff team and co-produced with volunteers and service users as much as possible. Some of these groups had reached a stage at which Healthy Minds volunteers were leading the regular sessions. We have been looking at ways that some of these groups would be able to be delivered by volunteers, supported by Healthy Minds, beyond the closure of R&S.

Without Recovery & Support, our capacity and resources are limited, but thanks to our fantastic volunteers who have stepped up, we will have some groups and activities happening from September.

We want to make it clear that this is not a continuation of the Recovery & Support service. As it will be volunteer-led, some things might be a bit different. We are confident our volunteers will provide opportunities for people to come together, share stories, create networks and support each other.

Volunteers will be supported by staff from across Healthy Minds, including Safespace and our Volunteer Manager, and we are hopeful that as we move through this difficult period new possibilities may emerge over time.

More details will be sent out in October.

Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day happens every year on 10 September.
'Creating hope through action' is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide. Our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling.

Light a candle at 8pm on Saturday 10 September to show your support for suicide prevention, to remember a lost one, and for the survivors of suicide.

Come see us at Morrisons Elland on Suicide Prevention Day - we will be giving out candles to spread awareness.

Coping with the cost of living

Lots of us are feeling worried about the rising cost of living at the moment. With energy prices rising, many people will be struggling to afford basic services, having a big impact on our mental health.

We are here to support people through it however we can. Whether you need a comforting chat with someone who understands, or help being connected to another service, please reach out, we are still here.

We hope you find our 'Coping with the cost of living' article useful, sharing information including what financial support is available and other helpful links.

We will continually add to the page, so if you know of any relevant information or links others would find useful, please let us know and we can add them.

Fundraising News

Nikki and Kath Go Above and Beyond

One sunny Sunday in July, these two wonderful people gave their time and energy to swim for over an hour in Todmorden swimming pool to raise over £200 for Healthy Minds.

Thank you Nikki and Kath, we are so lucky to have your support. Nikki thinks we should make this an annual event and invite others to join her and Kath. We agree. What a fab idea!

Kerchelle goes 50 miles for Healthy Minds

In just 31 days, Healthy Minds fundraiser Kerchelle managed to walk 50 miles in Todmorden and the surrounding area.

Such an achievement and all to raise funds for Healthy Minds!

If you would like to show your support to Kerchelle and her brave challenge then you can still visit her JustGiving page.

Are you feeling inspired?

Fancy Fundraising for Healthy Minds?

We’d love to hear from you and your ideas!

Our amazing fundraisers are so important and we so appreciate their support.

We want to make it easy for everyone to fundraise for Healthy Minds. Look out for our new fundraising tool kit in the next few months. It will feature on our website and will give you all the tools you need to organise your very own fundraiser.

Want to fundraise for Healthy Minds?

See you at the finish line!

And we’re off! Just a few weeks to go before the big day: the Virtual London Marathon 2022, our 'Marathon for Mental Health'.

We are lucky to have 12 amazing participants willing to step up to the challenge and walk or run 26.2 miles for Healthy Minds.

Already they have raised £800 and that’s just for starters. Combined, they plan to raise loads more. What heroes.

The fabulous people from Halifax Woolshops have also been super supportive. They have given us space in the pedestrianised area to hold our Marathon for Mental Health Finish Line.

It’ll be displayed there from Wednesday 28 September, come down and take a look!

Join in the celebrations. There will be party food, cake and music at our finish line on marathon day - Sunday 2 October.

And finally, a shout out to local businesses!

Our beautiful finish line will be decorated in ribbons.

This year, local businesses can get involved by having their very own branded ribbon attached to the finish line. It will be seen by hundreds of shoppers visiting Woolshops over the five days it is on display.

For their generous sponsorship of £50 we will have a ribbon printed for them personalised with their own choice of words.

Please help Healthy Minds and spread the word!

Fun and games in the park
Our Lower Valley Community Health & Wellbeing Workers have held park play sessions in Brighouse, Rastrick and Elland over the last few weeks.

We have enjoyed parachute games, giant Ludo, hula hoops, bubbles,  scavenger hunts, ice pops and other outdoor fun!
Our Community workers Paula (Brighouse) Daniel (Rastrick) and Nicola (Elland) would thank everybody who joined in the fun!
Volunteers take to the waterways
"This was a thank-you day to our brilliant volunteers without whom Healthy Minds would fall to bits.

"Ably led by Safe Anchor Trust volunteer-workers we wended our way up & down the waterways around Mirfield and we had the most sunny and mellow late-summer day.

"Impresario, Cath (our Volunteer Manager) regaled us with lovely eats & treats; and the banter flowed just as freely as the waterways around us.

"Suzanne took the helm; Ann monitored onshore activities and Dean kept us all going with tales of yore.

"It was a happy wee crew that disembarked mid-afternoon to find their land-legs once again!"

- Wendy, Healthy Minds Receptionist & Volunteer.

Time Out's summer of fun!

Well, it has been a hectic summer holidays here at Time Out and we've loved every minute of it!

Cosmic Comics went down a treat at Central Library with "Marshmallow Holidays" created by the wild imaginations of Calderdale's young people.
See 'Marshmallow Holidays' Comic book here!
We had an awesome day at St Augustine's at their Wellbeing Day where we took along our fancy dress props - everybody had fun dressing up.

We were at the Outback again this summer meeting Park Ward Pollinators, finding out about bees and creating art in their honour. Curious Motion kindly came to Manor Heath Park for our party in the park.

Curious Motion helped our group made an amazing dance about things we might find in the park, from twirly ice-creams, to cheeky squirrels. We then had a feast fit for royalty and then let our hair down playing on the park and competing in sports games.
The Victoria Theatre kindly allowed us to use their amazing venue for a day of acting with our lovely volunteer and actor - Phil McGinley. The group's acting and directing skills were outstanding & they definitely gave Phil a run for his money!

We joined in with Calderdale Libraries Healthy Holidays sessions too - from digital art to poetry.

We are excited to be heading back into schools for mental health workshops from next week. We're busy bees 🐝 just how we like it ❤️
