Positions of trust

The changes to the positions of trust legislation have extended the settings and roles where it is illegal for an adult holding a position of trust to enter into a sexual relationship with a 16 or 17 year old in their care.

The CPSU have put together some answers to your frequently asked questions about what the change means for your organisation.

They have also developed two briefing paper that define abuse of positions of trust within a sports and dance context, and outlines the updated legislation passed in response to the success of NSPCC's Close the loophole campaign.

To access the papers and FAQs, please visit the CPSU Website.

Read the latest Active Cornwall Safeguarding Policy

We are pleased to announce the publication of our latest Safeguarding Policy. It has been developed, primarily, to guide Active Cornwall staff work and processes to create a safer environment for all.

But it is so much more than that.

Our policy aims to be a new staff induction resource, a go-to bank of guidance/advice and an example of best practice that other organisations across Cornwall can adopt. It has been approved by our Advisory Board and is just one tool in our safeguarding toolbox.

If you would like to use our policy as a template for developing your own, please email samanthalawrence@cornwall.gov.uk.

Speaking out in Sport - An animation for parents with children in sport NSPCC | CPSU

Keeping your child safe in Sport 2022

Previously known as Parents in Sport Week, CPSU has announced that this year they are launching Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport week.

This campaign will run year-round but will have an annual focused awareness week in the first week of October (3-9 October), where parents, sports clubs and bodies, and NSPCC ambassadors will help parents to keep children safe in sport.

We'll need lots of help to reach parents whose children are involved in sports this year. How you can help:

  • ask parents in your club to take the CPSU e-learning course
  • pin the above animation to your social media profiles during the week
  • watch the CPSU panel discussion video to see how parental involvement has changed over the years and get tips on how to involve parents in your club or activity
  • spread the word about the resources on social media using #SafeinSport and tagging us @TheCPSU and @NSPCC.

For information and resources for you to use to help us share the message, download the CPSU media toolkit

You can also share your support by downloading and posting the official digital graphics for TwitterInstagram and Facebook.

NHS Safeguarding App

The NHS Safeguarding app has been developed to act as a comprehensive resource for all. It provides 24-hour, mobile access on up to date legislation and guidance across the safeguarding life course.

The app also provides information on how to report a safeguarding concern and even has a directory of safeguarding contacts for every local authority in England, searchable by region.

It can be accessed via Apple iOSGoogle Play or it can be downloaded by visiting your device’s appropriate app store and searching for ‘NHS Safeguarding’.

Safeguarding people with disabilities

In the year ending March 2019, the Crime Survey for England and Wales found that around 1 in 7 (14.1%) disabled adults aged 16 to 59 years experienced domestic abuse, compared with 1 in 20 (5.4%) non-disabled adults.

In November 2018, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) published a literature review covering child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation in residential schools. Their review concluded that disabled children are at around three times greater risk of being sexually abused than other children.
