Welcome to news and updates of Parliament and the constituency.

September marks the beginning of the term for students, transition into autumn, and the return of MPs to Westminster following a summer in their constituencies. My brief holiday travel was to the Isle of Wight.

Liz Trus won the leadership contest. She is now Prime Minister following the resignation of Boris Johnson. She is the third female Prime Minister.

This week also marks the beginning of Liz Truss' term as leader of the Conservative Party, winner of the leadership contest following the resignation of Boris Johnson. Liz Truss is our new Prime Minister - the third female Prime Minister.

We look to the new Prime Minister for stability, reliability and integrity. Most will look to her for urgent and resolute, effective action to address the challenges that threaten our quality of living.

Liz Truss will be responsible for restoring trust.

The most immediate issues include arranging adequate help for people dealing with energy prices and the cost of living crisis; providing what is needed to support the NHS now under enormous pressure; reviewing the Northern Ireland Protocol.

I am asking the Government to make further progress on leasehold problems and the cladding crisis. Important also is the continued determination and perseverance in our response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As I serve as your member of parliament, I shall continue to do all the good I can to bring the attention of Government to delivering for communities and constituents across Worthing and Arun.

I look forward to engaging and working with our new Prime Minister as she too tries to do all the good she can.

No request for help from a constituent goes intentionally unanswered.

Below are updates from campaigns and activities in Worthing, Arun and Westminster.

Whilst the challenges may change; the opportunities to help and to be engaged with worthwhile causes will continue.

Updates from Arun, Worthing and West Sussex
Public Forum with PCC on Concerns about Travellers
Residents and groups from across the Worthing and Arun parts of my constituency were glad to meet with the Police Commissioner, Katy Bourne, at Ferring Village Hall to share the impact on their communities because of the recent traveller incursions. The commissioner and I heard about wrongdoings by the travellers and the problems the police had in managing blatant law-breaking. Residents told how they worked together to protect their private, communal and public lands for fear of losing them through breaking and entry. Unauthorised caravaners should not be breaking the law.
I will take opportunities to share residents’ experiences, highlighting the need for law changes that give our police and local councils the powers needed to reduce law-breaking from the small number in our traveller communities. Mayhem and crime has to be prevented. Local residents need the confidence to know that they are appropriately supported and can rely on the police to protect lives and property.
Concern for Local Bathing Water Quality
It is vital to protect the quality of our bathing waters. Sewage entering our rivers and beaches is wrong. We expect Southern Water to do better. In recent weeks I have been in close contact with Southern Water and the Environment Agency with great concern. I have joined with other MPs from across Sussex, calling for an urgent meeting with both organisations to press for improvements that minimise future pollution of our bathing water. It is essential that we monitor discharges and continue to increase our understanding of the scale of the issue. I will continue to raise these issues in Parliament.
Lansdowne Nursery Development Objection
For some time we have been anticipating an application for a housing estate at Lansdowne Nursery. It has now been formally submitted to Arun District Council and is available to view and to comment on, on their website. Lansdowne Nursery, like the vineyard and golf course, is an appropriate use of the green gap providing a natural divide between communities and bridging the South Downs National Park and sea. I encourage all to submit their views to the council. We recognise the need to defend our green lungs and not cement over every green field  along our stretch of the coast.
Worthing Rotary Club Carnival 2022
It was a pleasure to join local residents at the bank holiday weekend carnival organised by our local Rotary Clubs. This was the first carnival since 2019. It also marks the Rotary Club of Worthing's 100th year of service to our community. Ivy Arch Studios organised the varied programme of local music acts; Clymping Dog Sanctuary organised the popular dog show; and the carnival procession rounded off the weekend with a colourful train of floats, bands and dance groups. It was delightful to contribute to Mary Lemitte's collecting bucket. We look forward to next year's festivities.
A Good Friend of Whitebeam Wood
It was a pleasure to be at the public forum of the Friends of Whitebeam Wood to hear from those with a keen interest in the park about possible future activities and events. We exchanged ideas on how to raise funds to promote the Wood. It was good to see much of the effort that has already been put into nurturing the space, including durable fencing made of branches gathered from the woods. The biodiversity and tranquillity of this ancient woodland is a credit to the team. Our local community benefits from these grassroots activities for the good of all.  Do visit their Facebook group and get involved: here.
Updates from Westminster
"Boulder" Action to Tackle Trawlers
It is my pleasure to support Greenpeace in taking real action to protect our seas from destructive trawlers. The South West Deeps (East), like the Marine Conservation Zone in Sussex Bay off the coast of Worthing and Arun, is a designated Marine Conservation Zone, protecting rare species and habitats from excessive human activities like fishing. There is  industrial fishing frenzy in UK waters, harming and destroying valuable marine environments. The boulders, some named, dropped by Greenpeace will deter destructive bottom trawling. Wrecking these environments must stop.
Action on the Loan Charge Scandal
I added my name to an open letter to both leadership candidates urging them to review and resolve the Loan Charge Scandal if elected as Prime Minister. The retrospective nature of the charge can be unfair - many of those being most severely affected were 'duped' into the schemes with many of the actual perpetrators escaping without any form of prosecution. It is wrong that so many medium and small businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals are facing virtually unpayable tax bills for something they did not realise was illegal. Taxation, where necessary and due, must be fair.
Recognising Ukraine Independence Day
In August, we marked #UkraineIndependenceDay. We celebrate our close friendship with the people of Ukraine - a friendship that feels more akin to family. The day also marked six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. The tragic loss of life and suffering in Ukraine at the hands of the Russian state invasion remains difficult to comprehend. In the past six months, we have seen images of loved ones reunited and new friendships strengthened with Ukrainians arriving.  I encourage everyone to support Ukraine in any way possible. There are too many victims of war and aggression.
Progress on Leasehold and Ground Rents
We can celebrate some progress for leaseholders. Thousands who paid doubled annual payments will receive refunds.  In addition, growing numbers of developers will remove costly terms from leasehold contracts that cause ground rents to double in price every 10 years. These decisions follow action by the Competition and Markets Authority, and will directly impact over 5,000 households throughout the UK. I hope that everyone can receive refunds. This is added to the almost 20,000 who have already gained from the investigation into unfair leasehold contracts. Our work continues.
Progress on Energy Support for Park-Home Residents
Residents in park-homes owners have, apparently, been overlooked in much of the Government's response to the rising price of energy. It is good to have received reassurance from the Government following months of prolonged campaigning that, as part of a renewed package of support this winter, further funding will be available to provide equivalent support of £400 for energy bills for the households who are not reached through the initial package. This includes those who do not have a domestic electricity meter or a direct relationship with an energy supplier, such as park home residents.
NHS Sussex Vaccines for Monkey Pox
The NHS in Sussex is urging people who have been invited to receive a vaccination against monkeypox to take up the offer, helping to protect themselves and the wider community. Although the risk of catching monkeypox is low, the vaccine is being made more widely available to those at risk to help reduce the spread of the infection. The vaccine is only being offered to those people who are likely to have very close or frequent contact with cases. It is hoped that this will curtail the spread of the virus, reducing the risk to everyone. Those believed to be eligible for the vaccination are to be contacted.
