Hi <<First Name>>,

Another late newsletter, I was on holiday until September 4rd, and my busy schedule didn't allow to finish the newsletter early. Oops! Then again, it is important to take time off every now and then, something I forget very often! Speaking of relaxation, I've started working on a new project with that theme. :)

Mandala Mind

One of the things I wanted to do this year was to try to get commissioned for a board game project. I figured my character and creature illustrations would fit those products too, and getting freelance work in the digital game space proved to be more challenging than I initially thought. And that goal is reached! After a month of I posting my portfolio on BoardGameGeek’s forums and got in contact with Green Gourd Games to work on Mandala Mind, a 1 to 2 player solo or cooperative puzzle card game.

Initially I was brought on board for the mandala design only, but discussing the art direction they had in mind, they kindly let me do the graphic design too - which means I get to work on all the visual elements of this game!

It's different from what I normally do, I suddenly have to deal with fonts and lots of cards with small variations.  A fun diversion and I learn new things!
The game will hit Kickstarter later this year, I will keep you updated on the progress!

Power In Numbers Gallery Show

Last month I wrote about this show, previewing the piece I send in - guess what, I got in again! Even though I send the piece as soon as I received the news, it was still thrilling if it would get there in time. But it did!
And, the piece I send in last year was on display too! I totally didn't expect that!

Both pieces are still available for sale on Gallery Nucleus' website. Don't be alarmed by the steep shipping, it will get adjusted to a reasonable rate after purchase.

Social Media Review

Inspired by a newsletter by Rengin Tümer, I decided to critically review my social media diet. What platforms to bring me the most engagement? Are those the ones where I have gathered the most followers? The ones I check the most? And did all that time spend there actually bring me business opportunities?

You can read my thorough analysis on my blog, but in short: Instagram does really underperform in terms of results vs time spend on the platform. I won’t stop posting as I have a lot of real-life friends on there that I don’t see regularly, but taking all in account, it isn’t worth my time keeping up with the grind there. Instead, I’ll try to focus on Twitter more.

Other Things

  • TomoFair went better than expected! I wrote a full review on my blog, we'll be thinking whenever this joint venture will be something we'll repeat. If you're around Nijmegen next weekend (Sept. 10th and 11th) I'll be in the Artist Alley in the Mariënburg Library, part of The Big Draw!

  • I visited Gamescom! I had won a wildcard for the trade visitor and media day, which meant less queues to play popular games! I knew from 2019 Gamescom is far to large to visit in one day, let alone the afternoon we could attend with this ticket. Therefore I decided to take it easy and focus on playing games and having fun instead of networking. After all, I had won two tickets, and I didn't want to bore my boyfriend with obligatory networking talks.
  • Movie recommendation: 1917. I'm not a big fan of war movies in general, but this film has wonderful cinematography and revolves more about the human and unfair aspects of war rather than the heroic. Even though it is not really shot in one take, it makes you believe it was.

  • If you ever wondered how a Japanese typewriter looks, wonder no longer:
