Virginia State Senator Wants Kids to Find "Safe Adults," Other Than Parents, to Talk With About "Gender Transitions"

Loudoun County, VA - Every once and a while a politician will say the quiet part out loud. That is exactly what happened when Virginia State Senator Ghazala Hashmi did an interview with ABC7-WJLA in which she strongly backed school policies where parents are kept in the dark if their children want to claim that they are a different gender while at school.

Specifically, Hashmi suggested that when parents don't affirm their children's dangerous decisions, the child needs to find other adults that will rubber stamp their sharply-tuned-from-experience adolescent instincts.

From the interview:

“Of course, parents need to be involved with their children and with the lives and the experiences of their children that is absolute given but the reality is that many of our LGBTQ children are most vulnerable in their home,” Hashmi told 7News. “We certainly see it in the rates of homelessness of LGBTQ children, when a child comes out to a parent or household that is not receptive to their identity, many children are forced to leave their home and we see that as a sign of trauma. We also see a very high suicide rate disproportionately high suicide rate among LGBTQ youth who are not supported by parents, who are not supported by their communities, particularly their faith communities. And it is a deep tragedy. So of course, while we want parents to be involved in their children's lives, the reality is that not all parents are going to be supportive, and nurturing, and understanding of their children. And we really need to respect the child and their instincts and their ability to find safe adults with whom they can work and communicate. We would hope that that would be at the home, we would hope it would be with a parent, but sometimes children seek out other adults to assist them in this very, very difficult situation that they are in.
