ROCKIN' RECAP
PKO in SAN FRANCISCO!

ABOUT THE RACE: The August 6th ‘Round the Rock: Alcatraz Challenge offered three exciting and competitive courses on the central San Francisco Bay between the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. Courses are designed to provide great racing; spectacular and dynamic views of San Francisco landmarks; and to take advantage of tides and currents while ensuring the safety of the participants. This event is hosted by He’e Nalu O’ Marin Outrigger Canoe Club, a proud member of the Northern California Outrigger Association (NCOCA).

Long Course Co-ed Canoe Crew - This was my first long course and I was in the boat with Bonnie, Pat, Scott B, John S. & Tanya - steering. It was a great line-up! We started out strong and were ahead of the other Pale Kai boat for the first part and were also neck and neck with the boat Kim was steering with (KaiWai, North Bay Outrigger.). So it was a Pale Kai race! We all hung together for most of the race - there were about 4-5? boats ahead of us all and then the rest of the pack behind...and it stayed that way the whole way. The conditions were great for Alcatraz - not too choppy, not too windy and pretty clear. We did play a bit of ‘chicken’ (not really) with a tanker on our way back which was intimidating to say the least. It felt like every time we were turning to get out of their way, they went the same way - and they are a lot bigger and faster than us! yikes! But in the end, we came in 2nd behind the other Pale Kai boat and in our class. So it was a fun time! And a successful first long course race for me. - Katherine N.

Short Course Co-ed Canoe Crew - Ohana O ke Kai #220 hit the water with Geof, Patrick, Anne, Scott, Jeanna and Jenny. Geof steering, lined us up perfectly for a moving start and we managed to stay in the front of the pack throughout. We were passed by a couple of mens teams on the way to the rock, but a sweet turn around the backside kept us ahead of the other coed boat lurking nearby. On the home stretch, we battled like crazy with two other coed boats and it was pretty much neck and neck to the end. We were grateful for awesome conditions, amazing views, a powerful team and good vibes in the city by the bay! - Jenny B.
COMING SOON : Pale Kai "family & friends" day in October...join PKO members for a fun day out on the water...we want to show you what outrigger paddling is all about.
