[Report Release] "New York City's Workforce Landscape" with WPTI + CNYCA

NYCETC is excited to release our new report, “
New York City’s Workforce Landscape: A network of programs, providers, and organizations foundational for catalyzing a robust and equitable economic recovery,” an extensive overview of New York City’s existing workforce development ecosystem using results from a survey developed in partnership with Workforce Professionals Training Institute (WPTI) and the Center for New York City Affairs at The New School (CNYCA).

The report surveyed 143 organizations across the five boroughs and details the size, scope, and budget of the organizations that make up New York City’s workforce ecosystem; outlines the areas of service, modes of program delivery, and range of certificates and trainings offered; and describes the current state of affairs for the sector in 2022, underscoring the top challenges, needs, and priorities of workforce providers.

The report sheds light on how providers are reconciling the pressures of client recruitment and staff retention with the demand to expand services. This administrative burden has been noticeable following the global pandemic, as funding sources have become more limited even as organizations have been forced to invest in new technology in order to pivot for programming in virtual settings.

You can read the report here.

[Covid-19 Economic Update] Essential and remote-working industry jobs surpass pre-pandemic levels, while employment in face-to-face industries lags by more than nine percent
COVID-19 Economic Update is part of a regular biweekly Covid-19 Economic Update series. This week’s update was prepared by Emil Mella Pablo, Assistant Director for Economic Policy at the Center for New York City Affairs at The New School. Read past installments here.
Employment in New York City continues its slow recovery from its early pandemic lows, even as the national economy has now fully restored its pre-pandemic employment level. There were still 162,000 (or 3.4 percent) fewer total nonfarm jobs in the Big Apple in July 2022 than in February 2020.

The national unemployment rate edged up to 3.7 percent in August from 3.5 percent in July, as the size of the labor force rose faster than payroll jobs. Still, for the past five months the U.S. has added an average of 366,000 private jobs, a reasonably strong 0.3 percent monthly pace in the face of the Federal Reserve’s efforts since mid-March to cool the labor market. From March through July (NYC employment data for August will be released on September 15th), New York City has added an average of 25,100 jobs per month, a pace twice that of the U.S. as a whole.

Looking at employment at the industry level can help us understand what’s stopping the city from surpassing its pre-pandemic jobs levels.
