We Will Never Be Royals

But, we would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the passing of a woman who was a literal queen.

In addition to her many good works, Queen Elizabeth II showed us all that a great hat and a few devoted canine companions are important keys to life. We're raising a glass of gin and taking notes.

FORWARD TO SOMEONE ON THEIR FIFTH REWATCH OF "THE CROWN"

Buggy Town is Getting a Brewery

Specifically, an expansion of a local business: Southern Pines Brewing Co. In case you missed the news on Instagram, SPBC CEO Micah Niebauer plans to close on the historic 1856 Tyson and Jones Buggy Co. building before 2023, and transform it into Moore County’s third SPBC taproom.

“To be able to expand our footprint in our home, the Sandhills, is just incredible,” Micah said. “I don’t want to put the buggy before the horse, but we believe we are going to bring back this amazing building and contribute some of that amazing value back to the community."

Micah plans on a design that honors the history of the building (including, possibly, a buggy hanging from the ceiling), along with:

  • an outside bar, fire pits and an area for a large stage
  • pizza ovens in an open kitchen
  • a basement brewery operation
  • multiple bars on two floors
Before you ask, no opening date has been set. You see the state of that building, right?

Target Gets New Neighbors

More tenants have been confirmed for the Morganton Road development anchored by Target, according to documents submitted to the town of Southern Pines. The first? HomeGoods

Documents for the center also show that an exiting Aberdeen sports store will relocate. Yes, we'll have a fresh, new Dick's Sporting Goods that looks like our current Dick's Sporting Goods. Oh, and a Golf Galaxy.

The other confirmed tenant? A Five Below. Because Target's "Dollar Spot" isn't big enough for any of us. For larger renderings or just proof they exist, find the receipts here.

Catch Us Riding Birdie

Because Pinehurst No. 8 reopened this month with new TifEagle greens, fully restored bunkers with fresh sand, improved drainage throughout and removal of trees that blocked views of the course and of golf pants. Only members and guests can play No. 8, so this reno is just one more reason for us to book a room at Pinehurst Resort this holiday season. Escaping our family was the first one. Just kidding memaw, we love you. See what else is in the works.

Board Votes Against Banning Rentals

The Pinehurst Planning and Zoning Board (remember that six-hour meeting that drew 300+ people?) has recommended against the banning of short-term rentals in areas zoned for single-family use. However, the final ruling is in the hands of the Pinehurst Village Council — and they won't see the board's recommendation until October. Decision still TBD.

Sweet Basil Has Reopened

The downtown Southern Pines restaurant is serving again after an extended vacation for their staff, which meant a forced extended break between us and the Chicken Napa. They are continuing the takeout-only model, meaning you can order food and take it to-go or pick up your box at the counter and eat in the restaurant. Sweet Basil is currently open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday, but those hours could change. Place your order at 910-693-1487.

MORE SWEET NEWS:

  • Granny's Donuts is looking at re-opening in a few weeks, says owner Vina Phromsavanh, who is working to put a fresh coat of paint on the restaurant's walls. "We ordered some equipment and it's taken longer than expected to receive it," he said. "We're hoping around the beginning of October to open back up."
