Hello there, dear book friends.

'Tis the season to incite joy. And not just the joy that naturally flows from reading Ross Gay’s new book, Inciting Joy (but we do have more on that below 😊). There’s the joy of reading on the front porch as the weather gets ever-so-slightly less hot. The joy of cracking spines on those brand new fall novels. The joy of taking care of your community of reading friends with weeknight book clubs and the perfect recommendations for autumn weekends.

We’ve been talking a lot about joy here at Algonquin lately. And we’re not going to stop. Fall is the season most associated with transition and change, and we’ve decided to steer right into joy, where to find it and how to incite it in others. That’s why we’re sharing this Fall 2022 Nonfiction Preview with you today─and the Fiction Preview tomorrow. All the joy of new books!

Thanks for turning our pages.

Sharing Joy and Delight

We all could use some joy right now.

We’ve been processing so much news, information, anger, sadness, and confusion. It’s hard to know how to find delight. Or how to incite joy.

Enter Ross Gay with Inciting Joy, his new, electrifying collection of essays. Once again, the literary rock star who gave us the New York Times bestselling The Book of Delights gives us the book we need, just when we need it most. As he writes in Inciting Joy,
My hunch is that joy, emerging from our common sorrow—which does not necessarily mean we have the same sorrows, but that we, in common, sorrow—might draw us together."

We can't wait to share this book with you all. You can pre-order copies (it'll make an amazing gift!) now.

Inciting Joy will be available October 25.
The Book of Delights paperback is available now.

A Memoir of Food, Fat, and Family

Every person who has ever struggled with body image will relate to Fatty Fatty Boom Boom, the new memoir by Rabia Chaudry, the New York Times bestselling author of Adnan’s Story, the fierce advocate you know from the “Serial” podcast and her own wildly popular “Undisclosed” podcast.

"My entire life I have been less fat and more fat, but never not fat." This sentence from the memoir strikes deep in the heart and the belly. Then Rabia’s writing fills both─and we're not talking just about the scrumptious descriptions (and recipes) of fresh roti, chaat, chicken biryani, ghee, pakoras, shorba, and parathay. Or of Burger King and Dairy Queen and chicken baloney. Rabia shows us how to make peace with the bodies we have, bodies that get the job done but might not meet the expectations of others.

As Valerie Bertinelli said, Fatty Fatty Boom Boom is “a delicious and mouthwatering book about food and family, the complicated love for both, and how that shapes us into who we are. It’s such a relief to not treat food as the enemy any longer and start to learn how to love and nourish the body I have today. I absolutely loved it!”

Fatty Fatty Boom Boom: A Memoir of Food, Fat, and Family will be available November 8

Adoption, Identity, and the Meaning of Family

Award-winning journalist Erika Hayasaki introduces us to Isabella and Hà─identical twins who were born in Việt Nam, raised on opposite sides of the world, and reunited as teenagers─in her new book.
Somewhere Sisters tells the girls’ incredible story from their perspectives, challenging conceptions about transnational and transracial adoption, Asian and Asian American identity, the nature versus nurture debate, poverty and privilege, and what it means to give a child a good life.

“Stirring and unforgettable — a breathtaking adoption saga like no other; a provocative exploration into the ideas of family and belonging; and a deeply meaningful meditation on what makes us who we are and what connects us to one another,” said Robert Kolker, New York Times-bestselling author of Hidden Valley Road.

Somewhere Sisters: A Story of Adoption, Identity, and the Meaning of Family will be available October 11.
