The Syncopation Society is launching its first festival ever and the date is approaching! As promised you can expect a lot of great music with the support of our fantastic Berlin scene combined with special guests from abroad, including New Orleans based singer Meschiya Lake who comes just for the occasion. Other international guests include the Londoner Ewan Bleach, Mauro L. Porro from Milan and saxophonist Nanna Carling from Stockholm.
Concept
Each night will combine a concert with a jam session involving the local Berlin scene. This event is designed to suit dancers' needs (Lindy, Balboa, Shag) but also to awaken an interest in this music, aiming to create a unique exchange for musicians on stage with a dancing audience. The festival program also includes a music workshop (now sold out!), which will welcome participants from all around Europe to learn and/or deepen their knowledge about traditional jazz.
Topics
Other key points are the lectures, panel discussions, and dance tasters to create teaching and learning opportunities. The first topic about black heritage in jazz will be covered by Lindy Hop dancer Joren Baraka Van Eyken with a talk about African and American musical traditions. Another great feature will be a talk by 88-year-old musician Ernie Butler from Indianapolis. Ernie never stopped playing jazz and always kept a close connection with the dancing side of jazz. And from Osnabrück we are welcoming Momo who will present her portable exhibition about the origins of jazz and brings a dance taster together with Jean Bartolome from SwingStep.
