Dear Member

Welcome to our September 2022 Newsletter!

The sad news of the death of Queen Elizabeth on 8th September marks the beginning of ten days of mourning before her state funeral at Westminster Abbey.  The Queen certainly was an amazing woman, still working and serving the country right up until her final days, receiving our outgoing and incoming Prime Ministers at Balmoral only two days before her death.  On behalf of the Executive Committee and members of the Society I have sent our condolences to her family.

As a mark of respect our Bridgend Branch have cancelled their meeting on the day of her funeral, Monday 19th September.

September is the month when many organisations, not usually open to the public, have 'Open Doors' events - some are listed below or can be accessed via the Cadw website.

The 'Help and Brickwall' Sessions at Bridgend Libraries are recommencing this month.   'Ask the Experts' sessions are also available at Glamorgan Archives - see adverts below for times and how to book.

For those of you whose interest in history encompasses all eras we have been notified about an online course 'Wales and the Wars of the Roses' run by Aberystwyth University Life Long Learning Department starting in October - see details below.

Our Branches will be holding their AGMs in October either face to face or online.  All need volunteers to come forward and join their Committees and to help organise local events.  See also notice below with regard to Cardiff & Vale Branch.  The Society also still has a vacancy for a Membership Secretary.

The Resource Centre at Aberkenfig will be re-opening on the last Wednesday in the month on a trial basis with the first session planned for Wednesday 28 September 10-2 pm.   Volunteers are also need at the ARC to help with Society administration and research queries.

Unfortunately it may be necessary to curtail some of the programme of events we offer if further volunteers do not come forward to help share the load.  Information on all Society vacancies is included on the website.  https://www.glamfhs.org.uk/society-vacancies

Aberystwyth University Lifelong Learning Department  -
Online Course: Wales and the Wars of the Roses

Starting in October the course is online (distant learning) and self-paced. There are one or two Teams meetings for those who'd like to take part, but these aren't compulsory. There are two assessments but these are optional, so there's no pressure if people don't want to attempt these.

The course is university accredited and students get a certificate on completion. Here's a link to some more information: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/lifelong-learning/courses/course/details/HL103H_XE14210/

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY

We urgently need a volunteer to be appointed to the role of Membership Secretary.
The ability to use Access and Excel are essential requirements for this role.
The Membership Secretary is part of a Membership Team that processes membership subscriptions which are received via the Website, BACS, cheques and Genfair.

Training will be undertaken and it is hoped that a new Membership Secretary will be in place by the start of the new financial year on 1 September 2022.

Attending Online Meetings
1.  Free Tickets for our Online Meetings are made available via the Eventbrite Website.  www.Eventbrite.com.
2.  Links to each individual event are provided on our website - www.glamfhs.org.uk/events AND
3.  In our monthly Newsletters.
4.  Click on the link on the website/newsletter to go to the event on Eventbrite.
5.  On the Event Page click on the green 'Register' button and follow the instructions to book a free ticket.
6.  You will be emailed a registration confirmation.
7.  A few days before the event you will be emailed a 'reminder email' about the event.
8.  A day or so before the event you will be emailed a Zoom link.

You cannot access the event without this Zoom link so keep a look out for an email from Eventbrite in your inbox and spam folder.

It is a good idea to check you have received the Zoom link a few hours before the meeting as the meeting administrators are not usually able to check their emails once preparation for the event commences ie within 20-30 minutes before the event start time.

Using Zoom to join the Online Meeting
www.zoom.us
 1.  Download the Zoom program/App:  It is a good idea to download the Zoom program beforehand from the Zoom website.
2.  Alternatively you will receive instructions when you click on the Zoom link in your email (however this takes time if you do this just as the meeting is about to start)

3.  Click on the Zoom LInk in your Eventbrite email: If you have already downloaded the Zoom program - Click on the Zoom link in the Eventbrite email.
4.  Check your camera and microphone: You will be asked to check your microphone and camera are working.
5.  Waiting Room: You will be placed in a Waiting Room until the Administrators are ready to start the event.  Some events have a large number of attendees so it may take a while to let everyone in.

6.  Turning off microphones/cameras:  We will ask you to mute your microphones once you have joined the meeting.  Also turning off your camera once the event starts can save bandwidth and help if you have an intermittent internet signal or are using Wifi.

We hope to see you at our Online Meetings - Enjoy!

MEMBERSHIP

The most convenient way for us to receive your membership subscription is via the Website.  You can pay via Pay Pal, debit or credit card but you do not need to have a Pay Pal Account to do so.

We now offer membership to commence four times a year in 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October with the first paper journal being received the quarter after joining in March, June, September and December.  Past journals are available on the website in our Journal Archive.

Membership and access to the website is automatic if you pay via the website.  If you pay or renew by any other method eg Genfair, Standing Order or cheque then administration may take up to a week for the transaction to be processed and the website updated especially at busy times of the year.  So where possible please pay via the website as it cuts down our admin considerably.

We still have a few members that have not updated their Standing Order to the current membership rates.  These members will only receive the number of paper journals for the amount that they have paid and their access to the website will also cease at that date.  .

The date that membership expires is shown on the envelope of each quarterly journal and also when logging in to the website.   If you have let us know your email address you will also be sent an automatic reminder just before and after your membership expires.

For more information contact the Membership Team:  membership@glamfhs.org.uk
Gift Aid

UK members can now Gift Aid their subscription when paying online.  Please put a tick in the box on the form when completing your details to confirm that you are a UK tax payer and accept the conditions shown.
