2022 Southeast Conference on Asian American Studies
When: Friday, Sept. 9 - Saturday, Sept. 10
Co-hosted by the Asian American Center (AAC) at UNC and the Asian American and Diaspora Studies (AADS) at Duke, the conference will bring together scholars who research and teach Asian American Studies in the U.S. Southeast. It will be the first of such gatherings in the region’s history. After decades of student activism on both campuses, Duke’s AADS was founded in 2018, and UNC’s AAC was created in 2020. The conference will provide an opportunity to celebrate these institutional developments and to think together about the future of Asian American Studies in the region. Featuring Dr. Sylvia Chong as the keynote speaker, the conference will allow attendees to actively engage with each other and to discuss issues related to researching, teaching, studying, and growing Asian American Studies in the U.S. South. New Day Film Festival When: October 21, October 22 Where: Rubenstein Arts Center
The New Day Film Festival feature film, "Far East, Deep South," sheds light on the history of Chinese immigrants in the American South and the discrimination they faced during the late 1800s to mid-1900s through the emotional journey of Charles Chiu and his family as they travel from California to Mississippi to find answers about Charles’ father, K.C. Lou. "Far East, Deep South" will be shown at 7pm on October 21st. New Day will also be showing "Cruisin' J-Town," a film about the roots of the popular jazz fusion band Hiroshima, on October 22nd at 2pm.
ASA + DUU Film Screening: Everything Everywhere All at Once
When: Sept 9, 8pm Where: Abele Quad
The Asian Students Association and Duke University Union are hosting a showing of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once this Friday, 9/9, in Abele Quad at 8 PM!! There will be free popcorn and the soothing ambiance of world-ending peril. Remember to register on DukeGroups and we hope to see you there!
