Valeda F. Dent, our new vice provost of libraries and museum, wrote a welcome letter to Emory students, faculty, staff, and visitors, expressing her excitement at joining Emory University and encouraging those who haven’t yet to visit the Emory Libraries and the Carlos Museum. She also made a video that perfectly captures her sentiments about settling in at Emory.
Emory’s Music and Media Library is holding a huge vinyl record and CD giveaway (more than 8,500!), now through Sept. 15, in its space on the 4th floor of the Woodruff Library, above the main entrance. The music is mostly classical, with a few jazz and rock selections. The giveaway also includes music scores and books, and new items will be added throughout the event. Don’t forget to bring your own bags to carry off your treasures. The event is open to the public during regular Music and Media Library hours.
Don’t miss this conversation on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., when some of the best graffiti artists, writers, and historians sit down with Randy Gue, Rose Library curator of the exhibit “Graffiti: A Library Guide to Aerosol Art,” to discuss their art and much more. The conversation will take place in the Jones Room for an hour, then the event will move into the Schatten Gallery, where the audience can view the exhibit, enjoy refreshments, and chat with the artists and historians. No registration needed!
Decatur Book Festival on Oct. 1
features Emory authors
The Decatur Book Festival presented by Emory University returns to downtown Decatur on Saturday, Oct. 1, with more than triple the number of in-person author sessions – 16 this year – as there were last year. Emory-affiliated authors, from retired staff members to alumni to faculty to an undergraduate, will take part in author sessions. And the Emory tent returns, with the Emory Libraries and the Carlos Museums represented and Emory preservation staff member Julie Newton leading an interactive art activity.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15-Oct. 15, when we recognize the struggles, achievements, and contributions of Latin Americans and Hispanics living in America. And what better way to celebrate than with the student-led exhibit “Consciousness of Power: A Record of Emory Latinx History,” curated by senior Arturo Contreras, with help from his history professor, Yami Rodriguez, and Latin American Studies librarian Phil MacLeod. Contreras has written a blog about the exhibit, linked below.
