St. Illuminator's Celebrates the Feast of the
Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Last Sunday, September 11, we celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachverats). The Divine Liturgy was followed by the lively and beautiful ceremony of Antasdan (the Blessing of the Four Corners of the World) and the blessing of the basil. Afterwards, in Pashalian Hall, Der Hayr held a blessing of madagh, which was dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the heroic battle of Mousa Dagh and the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the city of Anjar, Lebanon, by the survivors. Anjar has been the proud home of the displaced descendants of Mousa Dagh, ever since.
The madagh was sponsored by the Lakissian family in memory of their beloved parents, Bedros and Diramayr Isgouhi Lakissian. The basil was donated by Mrs. Seta Stefan. The proceeds of the madagh will be donated to the Armenian schools of Anjar.

Խաչվերացի Տօնը Սբ. Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ մէջ
Կիրակի, 11 Սեպտեմբերին, Խաչվերացի տօնը նշուեցաւ Նիւ Եորքի Սբ. Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ մէջ։ Յաւարտ Սբ. Պատարագի, տեղի ունեցաւ Անդաստանի արարողութիւն եւ ռեհանի եւ մատաղի օրհնութիւն։ Աւանդական մատաղը նուիրուած էր Մուսա Տաղի ինքնապաշտպանութեան 107ամեակին եւ Այնճարի հիմնադրութեան 83ամեակին։ Օրուան հասոյթը ամբողջութեամբ պիտի յատկացուի Այնճարի վարժարաններուն:
Մատաղը նուիրուած էր Լագիսեան ընտանիքին կողմէ, ի յիշատակ իրենց սիրեցեալ ծնողքին՝ Պետրոս եւ Տիրամայր Իսկուհի Լագիսեաններու: Իսկ ռեհանը նուիրած էր տիկին Սեդա Սթեֆանը:

A Fulfilling Life of Service and Faith
On Saturday, September 10, Rev. Fr. Mesrob and Yn. Ojeen participated in a special memorial service held at St. Vartan Cathedral dedicated to Dr. Raffy Hovanessian, a respected leader of the Armenian community. Dr. Hovanessian was remembered for his lifetime of service as a physician, humanitarian, patriot, benefactor, and friend to countless Armenians worldwide.

Armenia Under Attack: Rally to Defend Our Homeland

In the wake of the recent attacks on Sotk, Vardenis, Goris, Kapan, Jermuk, Artanish and Ishkhanasar the AYF of the Tri-State Region: Manhattan “Moush”, New York “Hyortik” and New Jersey “Arsen” chapters quickly organized a rally for justice.
The rally to support our homeland took place on the evening of Thursday, September 15. Armenian community members mobilized from New York, New Jersey, and Long Island. The gathering began at St. Illuminator's Cathedral by prayer led by V. Rev. Fr. Sahag Yemishian, vicar general of the Prelacy and pastor of Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Church of Ridgefield, New Jersey, and Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, pastor of St. Illuminator's Cathedral, heading uptown to the Armenian Mission to the UN, where participants sang the Armenian national anthem (Mer Hayrenik), the Azeri Mission to the UN, the Turkish Consulate, and ending at UN Headquarters.

Funeral Service for Prof. Nina Garsoian
|
|
|
On Tuesday, September 13, Archbishop Anoushavan, accompanied by Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian and art historian Dr. Sylvie Merian, performed a funeral service at Riverside Memorial Chapel for Prof. Nina Garsoian, whose remains will be transported to Paris where she will be laid to rest in the family pantheon on October 16.

1954 - 2022
Karnig Baghtchedjian, born on October 18, 1954, in Syria, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2022, at the age of 67. The funeral and interment services took place on Wednesday, September 14, at Rosedale Cemetery, Linden, New Jersey.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his sisters Verginia and Maral Baghtchedjian, nephew Haig and niece Hera.

Իսկապէս ընտրուածը ան չէ՛ որ ինքզինք կը գովէ, այլ ան՝ որ Տիրոջ կողմէ կը գովուի:
Սակայն կը յուսամ քիչ մը ներողամիտ կ’ըլլաք, եթէ անմտօրէն ես ալ պարծենամ, ըրածներս յիշեցնելով ձեզի: Իսկ դուք համբերութեամբ լսեցէք:
Ես ձեզի հանդէպ Աստուծոյ նախանձախնդրութեամբ լեցուած՝ կ’ուզեմ որ միայն Քրիստոսը սիրէք, ինչպէս մաքուր կոյս մը որ իր սէրը կը վերապահէ անոր՝ որ իր ամուսինը պիտի ըլլայ: Բայց կը վախնամ որ ձեր միտքը ապականի եւ հեռանաք Քրիստոսի հանդէպ ամբողջական եւ մաքուր նուիրումէն, ճիշդ ինչպէս Եւան խաբուեցաւ օձին խորամանկ սուտերէն: Կը վախնամ որ նոյնքան դիւրութեամբ ընդունիք ո՛եւէ մէկը՝ որ մեր քարոզածէն տարբեր փրկիչ մը, ձեր ստացած Հոգիէն տարբեր հոգի մը, կամ ձեր ընդունած Աւետարանէն տարբեր աւետարան մը կը քարոզէ ձեզի:
Չեմ գիտեր թէ ես ձեր այդ նշանաւոր «առաքեալ»ներէն բանով մը ետ կը մնա՞մ: Թէպէտ ճարտար խօսող մը չեմ, բայց խօսածս գիտեմ: Եւ կարծեմ ատիկա ապացուցանեցի ձեզի ամէն ինչով: Արդեօք մե՞ղք գործեցի, որ Աստուծոյ Աւետարանը ձրիօրէն քարոզեցի ձեզի եւ ինքզինքս խոնարհեցուցի՝ ձեզ բարձրացնելու համար: Ձեւով մը միւս եկեղեցիները կողոպտած եղայ, ապրուստս անոնցմէ առնելով, որպէսզի ձեզի ծառայեմ ձրիօրէն: Ձեր քով եղած ատենս նոյնիսկ երբ կարիքի մէջ եղայ, ձեզմէ ոեւէ մէկուն բեռ չեղայ. Մակեդոնիայէն եկած եղբայրները հոգացին պէտքերս: Եւ ինչպէս անցեալին զգուշացայ, ասկէ ետք եւս ամէն կերպով պիտի զգուշանամ ձեզի բեռ ըլլալէ: Բայց Քրիստոսի ճշմարտութեամբը, որ իմ ներսիդիս է, կ’ըսեմ՝ թէ այս բաներով պիտի պարծենամ ամբողջ Աքայիայի մէջ, բոլորին պատմելով:
Աւետարան Ըստ Մարկոսի 10:1-12
Յիսուս հոնկէ ելլելով՝ եկաւ Հրէաստանի սահմանները, Յորդանան գետին դիմացի կողմը, եւ դարձեալ ժողովուրդը խռնուեցաւ իր շուրջ, եւ ինք իր սովորութեան համաձայն նորէն անոնց կ’ուսուցանէր:
Փարիսեցիները Յիսուսը փորձելու մտադրութեամբ մօտեցան անոր եւ հարցուցին.
– Մեր Օրէնքին համաձայն մէկը իրաւունք ունի՞ իր կինը արձակելու:
Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց.
– Մովսէս ի՞նչ օրէնք սահմանեց ձեզի:
Անոնք պատասխանեցին.
– Մովսէս մեզի արտօնութիւն տուաւ բաժանման թուղթ տալու կնոջ եւ արձակելու զայն:
Յիսուս ըսաւ անոնց.
– Մովսէս ձեր խստասրտութեան պատճառով այդ օրէնքը սահմանեց: Սակայն սկիզբէն, արարածներու ստեղծագործութեան ժամանակ, Աստուած «արու եւ էգ ստեղծեց մարդիկը» եւ ըսաւ անոնց. «Այս պատճառով այրը պիտի ձգէ իր հայրն ու մայրը եւ իր կնոջ միանայ, եւ երկուքը մէկ մարմին պիտի ըլլան»: Հետեւաբար այլեւս երկու չեն, այլ՝ մէկ մարմին: Արդ, ոեւէ մէկը թող չբաժնէ անոնք՝ որ Աստուած միացուց:
Տան մէջ աշակերտները դարձեալ նոյն նիւթին շուրջ հարցուցին Յիսուսի: Անիկա պատասխանեց.
– Ով որ իր կինը արձակէ եւ ուրիշ մը առնէ՝ շնութիւն ըրած կ’ըլլայ առաջինին դէմ: Կինն ալ, եթէ իր ամուսինէն արձակուելէն ետք ուրիշի մը հետ ամուսնանայ՝ կը շնայ:

For it is not those who commend themselves that are approved, but those whom the Lord commends.
I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I promised you in marriage to one husband, to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by its cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you submit to it readily enough. I think that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. I may be untrained in speech, but not in knowledge; certainly in every way and in all things we have made this evident to you.
Did I commit a sin by humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I proclaimed God’s good news to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for my needs were supplied by the friends who came from Macedonia. So I refrained and will continue to refrain from burdening you in any way. As the truth of Christ is in me, this boast of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia.
The Gospel According to Mark 10: 1-12
He left that place and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him; and, as was his custom, he again taught them.
Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

The Holy Virgins Febronia and Marina, and St. Shooshan,
daughter of Vartan the Great

On Tuesday, September 20, the Armenian Church remembers Sts. Febronia, Mariana, and Shoushan. The best known of the three is Shoushan, daughter of Vartan Mamigonian and great-granddaughter of Sahag Bartev. She was educated under the tutelage of St. Sahag and her grandmother, Sahaganoosh. Her father’s life and martyrdom influenced her to become a devout and faithful Christian. Her birth name was Varteny, but she was called Shoushan because of her extraordinary piety. She was married to Vazken, a son of a Georgian king, and had three sons and a daughter. After the death of her father-in-law, her husband became power hungry, went to Persia, renounced the Christian faith and returned to Georgia with another wife, and tried to force Shoushan to renounce her Christian faith. Even after years of imprisonment and torture she refused to renounce the faith for which her father had fought so valiantly.
Febronia was a nun of extraordinary beauty at Nisibis in Mesopotamia. She was offered to be spared from persecution and torture if she renounced her religion. She refused and was brutally martyred.
Although the daughter of idol worshipers, Mariana was raised by a woman who was secretly a Christian and was baptized at the age of twelve. At the age of fifteen she confessed to her father that she was a Christian. She refused to renounce her religion and rejected an offer of marriage by a local official telling him that she was “married to Christ.” She was tortured and martyred.
Փեբրոնէ, Մարիանէ եւ Շուշան Սուրբ Կոյսերու Տօնը
Երեքշաբթի, 20 Սեպտեմբերին, Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցին կը նշէ Փեբրոնէ եւ Մարիանէ կոյսերու եւ Սրբուհի Շուշանի տօնը։ Ամենէն ծանօթը Շուշանն է՝ Վարդան Մամիկոնեանի դուստրը եւ Սբ. Սահակ Հայրապետի ծոռը։ Ան դաստիարակուած էր Սբ. Սահակի եւ մեծ մօր՝ Սահականոյշի շունչին տակ։ Հօր կեանքն ու նահատակութիւնը ներշնչած էին զայն՝ նուիրեալ ու հաւատացեալ քրիստոնեայ մը դառնալու։ Աւազանի անունը Վարդենի էր, բայց կոչուած էր Շուշան՝ արտակարգ բարեպաշտութեան պատճառով։ Ամուսնացած էր Վրաստանի թագաւորի որդիներէն մէկուն՝ Վազգէնին հետ, եւ ունէր երեք որդի ու դուստր մը։ Աներոջ մահէն ետք, իշխանատենչ ամուսինը մեկնած էր Պարսկաստան, քրիստոնէութենէ հրաժարած եւ Վրաստան վերադարձած՝ ուրիշ կնոջ մը հետ։ Այնուհետեւ, ան փորձեց, որ Շուշանը հրաժարէր իր քրիստոնէական հաւատքէն, բայց ան մերժեց հրաժարիլ այն հաւատքէն, որուն համար իր հայրը քաջաբար կռուած ու զոհուած էր, եւ նահատակուեցաւ՝ բանտարկութեան ու չարչարանքի տարիներէ ետք։
Փեբրոնէ արտակարգ գեղեցկութեամբ կոյս մըն էր, որ Մծբին (Միջագետք) կ՚ապրէր եւ որուն առաջարկուեցաւ հրաժարիլ իր կրօնքէն՝ հալածանքէ ու չարչարանքէ զերծ մնալու համար։ Ան մերժեց ու չարաչար նահատակուեցաւ։
Մարիանէ՝ կռապաշտ ծնողներու դուստրը, քրիստոնեայ կնոջ մը խնամքով մեծցուած, թաքուն կերպով տասներկու տարեկանին քրիստոնեայ մկրտուած էր։ Ան տասնհինգ տարեկանին հօրը խոստովանած էր իր քրիստոնեայ ըլլալը, մերժելով թէ՛ հրաժարիլ իր կրօնքէն եւ թէ՛ ամուսնանալ տեղական հեթանոս պաշտօնատարի մը հետ, որուն յայտնած էր, թէ «ամուսնացած էր Քրիստոսի հետ»։ Այդ պատճառով ան իր կեանքը աւարտած էր չարչարանքով ու նահատակութեամբ։
