Friends —

Do you feel the chill in the air? There's still plenty of sun and heat for the end of summer, but there's no doubt that fall is on its way! To commemorate that, and kids heading back to school, we've got three excellent movies showing at the State this week: The second week of our Saturday Morning Kids' Matinees with Sing 2, an encore of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, and something spooky to bring in the season— Jordan Peele's Nope.

State Theater: Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
Friday and Saturday: 1pm and 4pm
Sunday: 1pm

After its international internet success, Jenny Slate's pint-sized creation finally makes it to the silver screen. When filmmaker Dean (played by director Dean Fleischer-Camp) moves into his new Airbnb, he finds something unexpected —Marcel, a plucky one-inch shell wearing shoes. Along with Dean, we enter Marcel's world, his relationships, and his search for his long-lost family. With a little bit of courage and help from his newfound friends, "Marcel is the Hero we need right now," writes Shirley Li of The Atlantic.

Reviews are in for Marcel from our Traverse City community. People of all ages, older couples, families with kids, young folks looking for something to do on a Friday night, all come out of Marcel with joyful tears in their eyes, and smiles on their faces. So sweet, we had to keep it for an additional weekend!

If you haven't had the chance to see Marcel yet, make the time this weekend, and you'll be glad you did.

Starring the voices of Jenny Slate, Nathan Fielder, and Isabella Rossellini.

State Theater: Nope
Friday and Saturday: 7pm
Sunday: 4pm

Truly the best horror movie of the year! Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) and Keke Palmer (Lightyear, Alice) star as OJ and Emerald, siblings trying to get to the bottom of the strange happenings on their family farm. Not since Us has a film struck such a resonant note between family and horror, reality and fantasy, and what it means to be a person watching a movie. Even for the horror squeamish, this film is a must watch. You will leave the theater asking the question OJ asks in the trailer: "What do you call a bad miracle?"
