Biden Pledge for Unity Blows Up in Recent Speech
Leadership freefall leaves Americans bewildered and cynical
Chicago, Illinois – President Joe Biden’s pledge to unite the U.S. looks like an increasingly distant prospect. People are even divided on the commander-in-chief's divisiveness, says Newsweek. A whopping 40 percent of those polled believe the president is dividing rather than unifying the country. After Biden’s polarizing speech even liberal media caught on. “Whatever you think of this speech the military is supposed to be apolitical,” CNN’s Brianna Keilar said. “Positioning Marines in uniform behind President Biden for a political speech flies in the face of that.

The ideological divide seems to be growing and most Americans are weary of the impact. What’s really broken down is trust in leadership, in government, in police, in military, in schools, and most major institutions. Americans are at a crossroads and most feel helpless to change the direction. According to Professor Lee A. Carter, the author of Leadership in Community, looking to government for solid solutions will likely leave us frustrated.

Overall leadership effectiveness is ranked in the 13th percentile with trust dropping and cynicism rising. At no time in American history has confidence in government leadership been so low and expectations for government to solve problems so high. For most Americans, this disconnect is made worse by economic policies that could have perpetuated higher costs while saddling Americans with greater economic burdens.

Carter says, “The world in which Jesus calls us to be His witnesses is volatile, uncertain, chaotic, and ambiguous.” But this doesn’t mean we don’t seek biblical solutions to social problems or injustices. Opting out of engagement, especially on moral issues, is not an option. He believes the most important thing a leader can do is to foster an environment of trust. Workplaces, government, and even churches depend on trust. If you want to weaken or eventually destroy an institution, create an environment where language is used to misrepresent what people can see or feel for themselves. “You can’t keep telling people everything is okay when they clearly see that it is not.”

According to Dr. Carter, Christians between the ages of 18 and 34 are even more critical of traditional leadership. They have higher rates of depression and suicide in part because of the non-stop talk about environmental disaster, war, homelessness, gender equality, racism, crime, and bickering between political parties. “The answers to what ail us are found in following biblical principles and living with integrity. We are living through one of the transforming moments of Christianity worldwide. Instead of opting out of evangelism, we can change the way we do evangelism – seeing it through the lens of relationship, service, and humility.
