A Message from Pastor Denise Carrell

This Sunday, we will wrap up the three-part sermon series: Come Thou Unexpected Jesus.
Come explore another example of a key Biblical moment when Jesus was, quite simply, not who people wanted him to be.

As his ministry began, he was faced with years of tradition, scriptures, teachings and laws which had culminated into a clear messianic expectation. The Israelites were expecting a very certain savior. And yet, as we will explore, Jesus seemed to have little interest in fulfilling that expectation. Jesus’ mission did not appear to be one of human appeasement.

Throughout these stories, Jesus had what seemed to be very clear moments of choice. What can we Iearn from these moments?

Short bio

Beth has been a member of Christ Congregation since 1995.  She moved to New Jersey to work in the chemical industry, and now manages an incubator for start-up science-based companies.  Beth has been playing piano since she was in second grade, and enjoys occasionally playing for church services as motivation to keep practicing.
The postlude on Sunday will be a duet with Joanne Hardgrove.

Ready to resume Bible Study this Sunday!

As announced last Sunday, we will resume Bible Study following the 10 AM services (2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays)!
This Sunday, Sept 11, will be the first gathering of the fall, and will start about 10-15 minutes after the end of worship. We will end by 12:15. It is discussion-oriented, and we welcome the input and insights of all participants.

The readings for this Sunday are ones I will use in my sermon for our observance of Just Peace Sunday, on Sept 18. Those scriptures are linked below.
After this week, we will return to using the lessons assigned in the Revised Common Lectionary for the Sunday following the one we meet for the Bible Study.

Psalm 85:8-11
Romans 12:14-21

Thank you to Jonathan, Sally, Ted, Linda, and everyone else who helped stabilize our cherry tree, minimizing the damage to the church roof.

We are hoping to be able to save the rest of the tree - please pray with us that the arborist's recommendations will protect it for years to come.
Sala, a Time of Fellowship

Save the date:  Thursday September 15, 2022 from 7:30-9 pm. A special Sala at Christ Congregation: “An Evening with Oneself” led by Reiki master and spiritual guide, Joanne Gorelick.

Bio:  Joanne Gorelick
Joanne has been a dedicated spiritual seeker for over 15 years, although her ‘seeking’ began long before that.  She has taught yoga and chair yoga since 2007, and has been an enthusiastic student of Advaita Vedanta, the Hindu Scriptures, for the past 10 years, finding truth in its teachings. In 2008 Joanne graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, certified as a health coach.  She is also a Reiki master and she has been influenced by ISHA yoga, A Course in Miracles, Dr. Joe Dispenza, and various other yoga teachers and Reiki masters.  In 2021, Joanne started studying Autonomic Response Testing under Dr. Dietricht Klinghardt, which looks at the body in terms of its light.  As Joanne continues along her spiritual path, she is eager to share what she has learned with others.

"The Lab," with Joanne
The starting point for "The Lab" is to accept, at least for the duration of the class, that each and every one of us is 'Divine Essence,' whatever that means to you.  As that Divine Essence, we are each worthy of compassion, forgiveness and love.  This class is an invitation to dare to suspend old, harmful beliefs (at least for the duration of the class), in order to experiment with new beliefs that promote healthier habits of thought and emotion.  With healthier thought and emotional patterns, we can create happier and healthier futures for ourselves.  Managing our minds and emotions is a skill that requires practice; "TheLab" is that practice.  "The Lab" encompasses chair/standing yoga, centering, pranayama (breath work), chanting, meditation and reiki, set to supportive and inspiring, if not healing, music.  Please join us!

Book Discussion Group

Folks,
Our next book discussion will be held by Zoom this Saturday, September 10th, at 7:00PM.

The book will be Abi Daré's novel The Girl With The Louding Voice.

"The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams.  Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself – and help other girls like her do the same.  Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will “break your heart and then put it back together again” (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams…and maybe even change the world."

Hope you will be able to join us.

Prayers of the People

"This is my prayer."
With gratitude for Darren's musical gifts and leadership in our worship this week.
With deep gratitude and love for Judy and Randy and the kids for the beauty of their life with us these 17 years and their life as it goes forward in their new home.
For continued healing for Debbie.
For those returning to school and for those beginning new challenges that are outside their comfort zones.
With gratitude for all those who leapt into action to take care of the fallen tree this week.
For healing and comfort for the unspoken burdens we bear, and for the caregivers among us who tire but whose work does not end.
For our pastor and church leadership.

For our pastoral search committee, our conference ministers, and our next pastor (whoever and wherever they are).
"This is our prayer."
