Welcome to our Spring edition of Get Moving Greater Bendigo.

Through the clouds and cold weather, we are starting to have warmth and sunshine. 

In this edition of Get Moving we feature some exciting things happening during the Greater Bendigo Seniors Festival October along with other things happening in our wonderful community.

Seniors Festival October 2-9, 2022
The City of Greater Bendigo is proud to support the 40th Victorian Seniors Festival, which takes place from October 2-9, 2022.

This year's theme for the festival is 'Takin' It Easy' so we encourage older adults to feel relaxed and comfortable while out and about enjoying the variety of events and activities during the festival. 

We are looking forward to connecting with you and celebrating the enormous contributions older adults make to our community.

Below we have highlighted just some of the activities happening during the festival. 

Printed programs can be collected from your local library, neighbourhood house, IGA supermarket, customer support office in the City's Bendigo and Heathcote offices and Visitors Information Centre.

Tania Kernaghan Concert

Join Tania Kernaghan for a very special ‘up close and personal performance as she shares with you the stories behind her hit songs which have been instrumental in shaping her stellar career.

Audiences love hearing her songs and the stories behind them - Where The Murray Meets The Darling, The Verandah, Nine Mile Run and Boys In Boots, along with a couple of old favourites Tania has handpicked to perform. Tania is joined on stage by long-time friend and talented musician, Anthony Tenace. Together, they take audiences on an entertaining, musical journey down memory lane, bringing smiles to faces and joy to hearts. Before Tania and Anthony take to the stage, 

Traditional Owners of Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Djandak will give a Welcome to Country followed by a didgeridoo performance.

Cooking Demonstration by Expert Eats
Brought to you by Healthy Heart of Victoria.

Join Jessica and Jennifer from Expert Eats to watch and learn how to
create delicious and nutritious food that is economical, easy to prepare,
and full of nutritious ingredients. You will learn about preparation tips,
ideas on how to make meals simple and affordable, and tasty recipes that
will improve your cognitive health, gut health, and mental health.

Multicultural Storytime and Morning Tea - Tell Me Another
Brought to you by the City of Greater Bendigo and Neighbourhood Collective Australia

Bringing the community together to hear a couple of stories from one
of Bendigo’s newest multicultural communities. Share some delicious
morning tea with us and watch a cooking demonstration as we celebrate
the contribution older adults make to strong communities. All welcome.

Bendigo Orchid Club Annual Orchid Show

Come and have a look at the beautiful displays of Australian and exotic orchids. Children get a free plant. Potting demonstrations and tips on growing orchids will be given.                                                
Raffle and refreshments available.

When: Friday October 7, 1pm - 4pm. Saturday October 8, 10am - 4pm.
Sunday October 9, 10am - 1pm

Exercise to Music and Tai Chi with Bendigo Health
Enjoy gentle exercises to music and experience the benefits of Tai Chi in
this introductory class.

U3A Bendigo Open Day

U3A Bendigo opens its doors and invites the community to come along and learn about the activities available. There will be opportunities for visitors to try out different activities such as music, singing, writing, art, poetry, craft, language and yoga.

U3A members are encouraged to bring a friend and introduce them to the wonderful world of U3A. This is an ideal opportunity to get to know what U3A is all about and a great way to meet new friends.

Free morning tea and coffee included. 

Booking is not required.

Spring Gully Evening Dance

A special invitation to all seniors to come along and enjoy social dancing
and listen to fabulous CD music in a very friendly and welcoming
atmosphere.

Your health in your hands

The Kangaroo Flat Library are holding a session for older adults to learn more about using My Health Record, Telehealth, eScripts and other digital health topics Build your digital health skills to make informed, confident choices to support your health and wellbeing online.

Redevelopment of the Bendigo Art Gallery
Thanks to the success and growth of the Gallery, It has outgrown its current facilities, and plans are underway for an exciting major redevelopment of the Gallery. 

The City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Art Gallery have appointed innovative architecture firm Jackson Clements Burrows and the renowned Clare Design to guide the Gallery’s transformational new expansion project.

A planning permit application for the project has also been lodged with the City’s planning department to enable the project to reach the investment-ready stage. Development of the project is subject to securing funding.

If funding is secured the redevelopment will increase exhibition and education spaces to provide more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the arts.

Bendigo Annual Tulip Display
As the sun starts to shine and we have warmer days, more than 53,000 of Bendigo’s famed-tulips open to brighten the beautiful heritage streets from mid to late September through to mid October.

The City of Greater Bendigo's Park and Natural Reserves team put on a great annual Tulip display along Pall Mall and Conservatory Garden. The display features tulips in an assortment of colours, sizes and blooming times. 

There will be curator talks conducted during the display, where the team will share their techniques and wisdom on how to create your own tulip wonderland.

Short Story Competition Celebrating our older adults

The City of Greater Bendigo recently invited children and young people in our community to write a short story and draw a picture of an older adult in their lives. 

All entries will be displayed at the Bendigo Library, Hargreaves Street during the month of October
