Mid-Semester Check-In

Even though we're only a few weeks into fall, now's the time to start thinking about mid-semester feedback to gauge how your course is going and what's helping or hurting students' learning. In case you missed our priority signup period for requesting a focus group with your students, we share resources on why and how to get students' input to improve your course.

As always, you can also find information on upcoming events hosted by the CTE and our partners across Grounds.

RESOURCES

pulse
Soliciting feedback from students during the semester is a great way to find out what's working (and what's not) while there's still time for you to make adjustments to your teaching. These resources can help you check the pulse on your course.
ICYMI: Responding to Critical Incidents
In response to the recent hate crime and vandalism on Grounds, we shared strategies and resources to help you address critical incidents in your classrooms.

CTE EVENTS

Openness, Equity, and Teaching Toward an Unfamiliar Sky

The Contemplative Sciences Center, Center for Teaching Excellence, UVA Library, and A&S Learning Design & Technology invite you to a public talk on open education and equity, followed by a roundtable discussion on the connections among open, contemplative, and anti-oppressive pedagogies.

TALK
Wednesday, September 14

3:30 to 4:45 PM
Wilson 142

Guest speaker Robin DeRosa will cast a critical eye toward the challenges we face in public higher education and investigate how the daily work of faculty, staff, and students can be leveraged to restore a hopeful vision for the future of learning. The twin values of equity and openness will serve as a lodestar as we consider how pedagogy, course design, scholarship, and the daily operations of our universities can guide us into a future that is humane, vibrant, and beyond our expectations. No registration required; add to calendar.
ROUNDTABLE

Wilson 117

This discussion focuses on open and contemplative pedagogies with particular attention to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging. Registration is required and will be limited to 20 people. Email CSC's Karolyn Kinane to reserve your spot.

KEYNOTE: The Promise and Practice of Inclusive STEM Education
In this talk, we will explore how inclusive approaches, agnostic to discipline, position us to empower students with the agency needed for social participation. Necessary for this thinking is a slight pivot away from subject matter focus, leaving room for a more human-centered approach to teaching.
Bryan Dewsbury
Bryan Dewsbury, Ph.D is an Associate Professor of Biology at Florida International University. He is the Principal Investigator for the SEAS research program, focusing on questions related to identity, bias, relationships, and the effects of those variables on learning. Dr. Dewsbury's work addresses pressing issues such as student retention in STEM fields, the under-representation of minority groups in certain STEM fields, and the role of affect (instructor and student) in promoting student learning gains.
