CP Tech Center publishes new edition of Concrete Pavement Preservation Guide
|

Pavement preservation is often described as “providing the right treatment to the right pavement at the right time.” To help highway agencies put that maxim into practice on their concrete pavement networks, the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) recently released the third edition of its Concrete Pavement Preservation Guide.

|
|
“Several concrete pavement preservation treatments are available to meet a range of conditions,” said the guide’s project manager Steven Tritsch, an associate director at the CP Tech Center. “These treatments are often applied in combination to address several deficiencies and to maximize overall effectiveness—and when applied in a timely fashion, preservation treatments can also significantly improve pavement performance and extend service life.” More

Evaluating driver behavior at rural stop-controlled intersections

Nicole Oneyear, a research engineer at the Institute for Transportation (InTrans), recently led an Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) webinar that discussed the results of a study that evaluated driver behavior at rural stop-controlled intersections using the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS).

But why this type of intersection? According to Oneyear, stop-controlled intersections make up approximately 30% of all crashes in rural areas. They also make up about 6% of all fatal crashes. One reason for such a high fatality rate is because of higher-than-average speeds (often 1.6x to 2x faster). More

2022 Iowa Build a Better Mousetrap winners named
|

|
What do a shop clean-up squeegee, cold mix placer, and salt/sand spreader lifting jig all have in common? They’re all three innovative projects undertaken this year in Iowa counties, for one. They’re also winning entries in the 2022 Iowa Build a Better Mousetrap (BABM) Competition.
|
|
|
|
The winning entries—from first to third—are the secondary roads departments in Madison County with the shop clean-up squeegee, Jones County with the cold mix placer, and Linn County with the sand/salt spreader lifting jig. The winning counties were initially recognized at the ICEA Mid-Year Conference in July and will receive a plaque at the Iowa Streets and Roads Conference in September. Congratulations to them all!
