Second Response Program: The PLAYSHOP

Experience firsthand how playful, body-centered approaches help kids mitigate traumatic experiences.   This technique also works to just help kids (and adults) process emotions.

About this event

The safe, healthy development of children around the world continues to be threatened by natural disasters, political violence, pandemics, immigration issues and other adversities that can have life-altering consequences. One out of six children will develop PTSD after experiencing a traumatic event.

Body-centered approaches help kids resolve conflicts, mitigate traumatic experiences and recover confidence and joy amidst traumatic events - including the current pandemic environment.

This in-person training will examine the theory supporting the somatic therapy known as PLAYshops - followed by an actual PLAYshop where you will will experience how emotions shift through movement. It's a great experience and we hope you will join us.

For the past twenty years, Connecticut based initiative Second Response has trained 6,000 parents and caregivers and reached more than 300,000 children worldwide with their non-verbal, carefully designed PLAYshops that can reduce the incidences of post-traumatic stress and help to restore safety and joy.

Facilitators of this initial session William Spear, Jonah Spear and guest offer extraordinary experience and insight into working (and playing) with children of all ages. This is the follow up training to two online sessions we held during COVID..

This unique program has two goals: the first aim is to prevent and reduce children's post-traumatic stress-related symptoms, depressive symptoms, somatic complaints, functional impairment, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety - all of which are common in children who have experienced trauma; the second is to build capacity on the ground by training MRC Volunteers and other community members to respond effectively to help kids after a disaster (or anytime they can benefit from stress relief). Where we might use this method to help kids: in the container of an evacuation shelters, at family reunification centers, clinics and schools.

NOTES:

  • Park in rear of building
  • Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to move around!
  • Is weather allows, we may move outside for the movement part of the training
