At its first pop-up exhibition, Priska Pasquer Paris is proud to present South African photographer Pieter Hugo. This marks the Cologne-based gallery’s sixth solo show featuring the artist. Hugo is known for his haunting portraits, still lifes, and everyday scenes shot in diverse locations around the world. Collectively his various series of pictures read like a social study, they provide intimate insights into the everyday reality of different social groups living alongside each other and the sharp contrasts between them. The exhibition “Beauty and Asymmetry” concentrates on Pieter Hugo’s portraits, which linger long in the memory. The focus is on marginalized people and their stories are rendered respectfully and sensitively by the artist. The strength of Hugo’s portraiture lies in the play between documentary and performance.
Priska Pasquer a le plaisir de présenter le photographe sud-africain Pieter Hugo dans le cadre de la première exposition pop-up à Paris, qui marque la sixième exposition personnelle de l'artiste à la galerie de Cologne. Pieter Hugo est connu pour ses portraits obsédants, ses natures mortes et ses scènes quotidiennes, qu'il crée dans divers endroits du monde. Prises ensemble, ses différentes séries d'images s’apparentent à une étude sociale, car elles donnent un aperçu intime des réalités de la vie des différents groupes sociaux, qui, bien que très éloignés, coexistent souvent. L'exposition "Beauté et asymétrie" se concentre sur les portraits de Pieter Hugo qui marquent durablement les mémoires. L'accent est mis sur les personnes marginalisées et leur histoire, que l'artiste capture avec respect et sensibilité. Priska Pasquer Paris freut sich im Rahmen der ersten Pop-up-Ausstellung den südafrikanischen Fotografen Pieter Hugo zu präsentieren, womit die in Köln ansässige Galerie die sechste Einzelschau des Künstlers realisiert. Hugo ist bekannt für seine eindringlichen Portraits, Stillleben und Alltagsszenen, die an diversen Orten der Welt entstehen. Zusammen lesen sich seine verschiedenen Bildserien wie eine soziale Studie, da sie intime Einblicke in die Lebensrealitäten unterschiedlicher Gesellschaftsgruppen geben, die oftmals in starken Kontrasten mit- und nebeneinander existieren. Die Ausstellung Beauty and Asymmetry legt einen Fokus auf die Porträts von Pieter Hugo, die im Gedächtnis lange nachwirken. Im Mittelpunkt stehen marginalisierte Menschen und ihre Geschichten, die der Künstler mit Respekt und Feingespür einfängt. Die Kompositionen der Motive entstehen in engem Austausch zwischen dem Fotografen und den Portraitierten und wirken oftmals wie ein Spiel aus Dokumentation und Inszenierung.
Pieter Hugo was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1976 and he lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
Pieter started taking photographs at the age of twelve having been bought a camera by his father. He has gained an impressive reputation and an enviable following for both his documentary photography and his striking fashion images - published in titles such as Arena Homme Plus and Document Journal. His work appears in many prominent International public and private collections including MOMA NY, V&A, Centre Pompidou and The Rijks Museum. Major museum solo exhibitions have taken place at Museu Coleção Berardo, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the Hague Museum of Photography, Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Fotografiska in Stockholm, MAXXI in Rome and the Institute of Modern Art Brisbane, among others. He received the Discovery Award at the Rencontres d'Arles Festival and the KLM Paul Huf Award in 2008 as well as the Seydou Keita Award at the Rencontres de Bamako African Photography Biennial in 2011.
