👋 Good morning! I’m Shawna Chen, The Yappie’s editorial director. We’ve been on pause for the last few months to grow our team, refocus our strategy, and make changes to our operations in light of new grants. We’ve also been working on several long-term projects which we’re thrilled to be rolling out for AAPI Heritage Month.

Starting this week, our team will publish a series of stories that were made possible by a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network’s Advancing Democracy initiative. In collaboration with our partners at Self Evident and AZI, these in-depth projects are focused on how AAPI communities are tackling barriers to democracy and will feature original art from Shannon Lin.

We’ll be publishing an article a week, and as part of this grant, you’ll be prompted to complete a quick survey at the end of each story. Any anonymous feedback you provide will allow The Yappie to assess the value of each piece and improve on our future coverage.

👉 Here’s a preview of what to expect…
  • Our first story focuses on Asian American fact-checking groups that are aiming to combat the growing mis/disinformation crisis among Asian immigrants on social media platforms. — by Shawna Chen

  • Our second story looks at the Marshallese community in Arkansas and how leaders are working to provide essential aid in the shadows of America’s nuclear legacy, climate devastation, and lack of federal resources. — by Joshua Yang and Javan Santos

  • Our third story examines the school-to-prison-to-deportation pipeline in California, and the advocates who are fighting to prevent federal immigration agencies from taking incarcerated Southeast Asian refugees from the only home they’ve known. — by Katelyn Monaco and Samson Zhang
Thank you for supporting our coverage on Asian American and Pacific Islander politics and activism. We’re excited to be back in your inboxes, and we hope you’ll take the time to wade through these stories when they go live.

By reading, sharing, and funding our work, you’re helping to keep our communities informed and empowered.
