Dear friends,

Since I became an alum of this fantastic community of human rights defenders, our world has again and again proved that the rights based system needs defenders. Sometimes systems are challenged on a global scale whether it be a financial crisis, a pandemic or our climate. Sometimes it can be a national or regional crisis. The atrocities we are witnessing in Ukraine affect some of us more than others. Alumni in Ukraine are suffering great human rights violations, resisting and surviving. In neighbouring countries, alumni support systems to provide direct humanitarian assistance and from the rest of Europe and around the globe we all feel the impact and act in the way that makes most sense to our values and us. The global solidarity is significant and remarkable to witness in a time of darkness. Unfortunately, it affects those of our fellow humans who are already fragile. With Ukraine in focus, others’ are forgotten and pushed further to the fringes. We see Governments reshuffling development assistance away from the poorest to the Ukraine response. Rather than eroding aid and put existing efforts to alleviate humanitarian and development needs in peril imagine if we could muster a similar sense of solidarity and action around Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan and not the least Yemen.

The global alumni community can and should play a role in responding to human rights violations around the world. We need to keep our community alive and thriving to do that best. Now you have an opportunity to grow and influence our community. Our General Assembly opens in May and closes in June. Four board members and a president is on election. Maybe one of them is you or one of your alumni friends. We urge you to be active in our community either through the board, as a supporting member or by joining activities that we create for all of us. You can sign up and support the EMAlumni Association here and exercise your democratic right.

Happy voting!

In March 2022 the Global Campus Alumni Association launched a Survey to Re-imagine the future of the Association, by gathering inputs regarding the needs of the alumni by the alumni themselves.

In the same framework, three online brainstorming sessions were held, where  representatives of ERMA, ARMA and LATMA presented their realities and views for the future, both concerning their own associations, as well as for the GCA. The brainstorming sessions are ongoing and their results will be systematized along with the survey results for future action.

MEET THE BOARD

Michele ROMANO (EMA 2014)
After he graduated from EMA, Michele became an associate researcher at the University of Zürich - Centre for Human Rights Studies to start a great journey that would lead him to explore an area in human rights that has been almost totally forgotten so far: basic human rights of vulnerable entrepreneurs. To do so, Michele tackled the issue of entrepreneurial rights from different angles in order to answer the dilemma about whether and to what extent the entrepreneur is already a recipient of certain human rights. The findings of Michele's work assessed that to-date enforcing basic entrepreneurial rights at human rights level can strengthen the development of more entrepreneurial-oriented international and national policies for poverty alleviation.
If you want to connect with Michele to get to know more of his work in detail or collaborate on future projects, feel free to reach out to him at micheleromano87@gmail.com. More info on Michele's work here.
