ECSA Conference 2022 in Berlin: Deadline extended until May 31.

Last days to submit your contribution to the ECSA2022 conference on Planetary Health. The concept of planetary health is based on the understanding that human health and human civilization depend on thriving natural systems and the sustainable stewardship of those natural systems. This demands not only knowledge and commitment of health and environmental sciences, but inter- and transdisciplinary efforts from all research fields and societal and political actors.

The ten principles of citizen Science

This document is now available in Ukrainian, thanks to Serhii Nazarovets from the Borys Grichenko Kyiv University.
We wish to share the message that Serhii writes to us by delivering the translation: “As a result of the war, we already have significant losses in research infrastructure, so perhaps national Citizen Science projects will help our scientists and PhD students return to research. So far it's just a dream, but who knows…”

ECSA Webinars

In April there were two ECSA Webinars, both of them were recorded in case you missed them and can be found on our YouTube channel

Farmland citizen science training

The first training in citizen science in farmlands by the EU-supported project FRAMEwork (Farmer Clusters for Realising Agrobiodiversity Management across Ecosystems) is taking place  in Luxembourg on May 3, 2022. The training is for project facilitators from ten farmer ‘clusters’ that are located across Europe from Spain to Latvia. The training will use BioBlitz and iNaturalist and it follows immediately after the CityNatureChallenge in Luxembourg.

New Spatial Data Recording for Citizen Science Apps

In many Citizen Science projects, working with a spatial dimension is at the core of the research - from transects to habitat monitoring. A new feature for all Apps on the SPOTTERON Citizen Science Platform makes it easy for users and researchers to record spatial data in a project. Learn more about the new Spatial Data Recording Toolkit here

New Open Access e-book: Citizen Science and Social Innovation: Mutual Relations, Barriers, Needs, and Development Factors

Social innovations are usually understood as new ideas, initiatives, or solutions that make it possible to meet the challenges of societies in fields such as social security, education, employment, culture, health, environment, housing, and economic development. On the one hand, many citizen science activities serve to achieve scientific as well as social and educational goals. Thus, these actions are opening an arena for introducing social innovations. On the other hand, some social innovations are further developed, adapted, or altered after the involvement of scientist-supervised citizens (laypeople or volunteers) in research and with the use of the citizen science tools and methods such as action research, crowdsourcing, and community-based participatory research.

Citizen science for a vulnerable group: deaf and hard of hearing adults

“Social Inclusion and participation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults in Citizen Science for Climate Change” is a new EU-funded project that started in February 2022. The project addresses the inclusion and active participation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community in matters of climate change.

Teaching Green

Teaching Green is an international project that aims to support the competencies and skills of teachers (of students aged 10-16) in the implementation of practical environmental education which raises the awareness of climate change, its impacts and mitigation actions. Our objective is to support critical thinking, digital skills, sense of social responsibility for local environment and foster the environmental behavior of students as citizen science.

ECSA project updates

ROSiE

On the 7th of April the 4th meeting of the cross-Swafs Stakeholder Forum for Responsible Open Science took place online. These are great opportunities for different projects to network, motivate and influence each other.

eu-citizen.science

In case you missed it, we have been publishing articles on the blog of EU-Citizen.Science. Read up some reflections from the first course on CS and local ecological knowledge at the University of Iceland and on interviews on artificial intelligence and CS and on engagement in CS among others.

Do you want to share citizen science events that might be relevant to the community? Then register on EU-Citizen.Science and share events with the community of platform users via the “New submission” button at the top right corner once logged in!

SOCIO-BEE

SOCIO-BEE participated at the Engaging citizen science conference in Aarhus with the round table discussion “Identifying CS stakeholder profiles and developing multi-level and sustainable engagement strategies”. Thank you everyone for your contributions!

SOCIO-BEE was present at the EAHL 2022 in Ghent (20-22 April 2022) .Departing from the challenges faced by citizen science projects in healthcare, including the lack of a commonly accepted definition of citizen science, we investigate how the pandemic has led to an increase in citizen science projects in the sector of healthcare research. Specifically, we explore the role of law and policy and the respective discourse.” Link to the programme

Cos4Cloud

Over the next few months, Cos4Cloud will organize activities to test the services developed within the project. Keep informed and do not miss the opportunity to participate by joining the Cos4Cloud testing community here!

According to a new research study published by Sustainability, the technology that Cos4Cloud is developing can support citizen science observatories to increase their data quality and quantity to monitor the sustainable development goals (SDG) indicators! Read more about it here.

In other news, Cos4Cloud partner Inria has recently developed a web component for AI-taxonomist to allow web developers to integrate a Photo ID widget into their website with only two lines of code. More on this here.
